Miami University seeks a collaborative and knowledgeable Woodshop Manager to operate and manage the Department of Architecture and Interior design woodshop and digital fabrication facilities.

Job Description

The Department of Architecture and Interior Design at Miami University is seeking a highly skilled and motivated individual to manage the department’s shop and digital fabrication facilities. This position involves overseeing the daily operations of both the physical and digital resources used for teaching, learning, and project creation within the department.

This is a 12-month, salaried position. (July 1, 2025 start date)

Key Responsibilities Include

  • Oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the Architecture and Interior Design shop and digital fabrication facilities
  • Develop, implement and maintain Policy and Procedures Manual as guidelines for lab practices, keep current with new technologies and safety regulations and research/develop ADA procedures.
  • Train, coordinate and lead graduate and undergraduate staff members; including but not limited to work schedules, lab assignments and maintenance of shop equipment.
  • Conduct risk management assessments and proactively evaluate the physical environment of the shop on a regular basis.
  • Establish and maintain a safe working environment. And monitor shop users are following proper safety protocol in the facilities.
  • Support, troubleshoot and maintain all digital and analog tools and equipment within the woodshop and digital fabrication facilities.
  • Research, evaluate and recommend purchases of appropriate equipment for the facilities.
  • Collaborate with supervisor to implement new technology integrations, lead the evaluation of technology pilots and troubleshoot where necessary to ensure successful completion.
  • Purchase and maintain supplies and materials that help facilitate work in the shop and student projects.
  • Manage a budget that supports the shop resources.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff and students to integrate the use of fabrication tools into curriculum and academic projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in architecture, interior design or a closely related field, or Bachelor's Degree in architecture, interior design or closely related field with a minimum of five years of relevant experience as exemplified by professional qualifications and portfolio review. First Aid and CPR Certification required by time of hire.

  • Construction skills
  • Building and facilities maintenance experience
  • Furniture building Skills
  • Expertise in digital and analog fabrication tools
  • Strong focus on safety, and the ability to support and train students, faculty, and staff in the use of these resources.
  • Experience in woodworking, model-building, digital fabrication.
  • Experience w/ Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience implementing and supporting policies and procedures on the safe use of tools and equipment in a studio, maker-space or shop environment required.
  • Experience teaching shop methods and materials, shop safety and protocol
  • Ability to aid faculty pedagogy with shop fabrication demonstrations
  • Experience w/ design and production software (Rhino, Illustrator, Autocad, etc.)
