This position is in the Technical Service and Development Organization at the Battleground Manufacturing Complex. Technical Service Department supports annual sales of nearly five billion pounds of polyethylene and polypropylene, used to produce molded containers, pipe, film, tapes, fibers, packaging and various other plastic products. The Fabrication Lab Supervisor is expected to be able to combine business acumen with an understanding of customer needs and achieve business goals.Â
The Main Purpose of the Role : Â
The main purpose of the Fabrication Lab Supervisor (FLS) is responsible for managing the fabrication lab and supervising and developing the support staff as well as ensuring a significant set of fabrication equipment is safe, maintained in proper condition, and operated in a safely. The incumbent controls and improves the safety, quality, reliability, technical capabilities, efficiency and productivity of laboratory staff. This role manages 1000 TDRs (Technical Data Requests) a year in support of the product development, commercial development and technical service groups. The team supports 20 engineers and scientists. Incumbent is responsible for keeping abreast and managing all of the certifications, compliance and regulatory issues linked to the automotive segment and UL listing for HDPE and PP. INEOS is seeking a strong individual to work in our Technical Service Department to support various polypropylene and polyethylene product applications.
Responsibilities AND Accountabilities
- Work closely with various functional areas (analytical, product development, TS&D engineers, logistics, manufacturing, customer service, business management and sales) to resolve customer issues, while minimizing commercial exposure. Â
- Actively participate in routine communications with TS&D partners and leadership to ensure timing, quality, scheduling, and priorities are clear to stakeholders.
- Ensure adequate, competent laboratory resources and capabilities are available and properly balanced to support the technology plan as well as the daily business needs. Most important activities:
- Resource to the Gensuite quality reporting process for TS&D
- Resource to the 6 sigma projects for TS&D
- Prioritizes technical support for 1000 TDR’s annually.Â
- Coordinates safety agenda and ensures SOPs are preparedÂ
- Challenges TDR submissions to find cost reductions
- Understand customer needs and integrated new tests and schedules as warranted
- Ensure all equipment is reliable and calibrated
- Implement new technology as needed
- Develop and prepare Capex plan for fabrication lab and support area
- Ensure equipment is properly maintained
- Conduct Performance and Development Plan reviews of TS&D technicians Â
- Balance workload among techniciansÂ
- Control non-headcount costs closely; do not exceed total annual budget
- Single point of accountability to maintain key HDPE and PP product listing linked to UL and the automotive and other product segments including staying abreast of changing requirements
- Participate in product audits to ensure standards are met
- Ensure that the quality management system is maintained within the laboratories.
- Complete internal and external ISO audits with no findings or recommendations to maintain ISO certification.
- Provide leadership in HSE and ensure that the TS&D support staff is focused on safety, meets and exceeds HSE standards and requirements, attends to near miss reporting/root cause analysis and shared learning and champions the MOC and related PSM processes.
- No lost time injuries, no OSHA recordables
- Participate in Asset Care Audits, BSP, Housekeeping inspections, VTA training
- Document all incidents and complete all action items in Gensuite
- Improve safety conditions in laboratory by championing Seahawk safety evaluations and demonstration of leadership in implementation of 20 Principles for Process and Behavioral Safety including procedure reviews, and equipment audits.
Skills & Knowledge Required
Education/Experience
- High School Diploma or Associates Degree or equivalent required
- 3 years of experience in polymer industry or a directly related field is required.
- B.S in Chemistry / Engineering or similar experience desirable
Technical skills
- Required:
- Experience and knowledge in testing, lab operations and quality processes
- Understanding of project/portfolio management and stage-gate processes
- Understanding and working knowledge of polymer fabrication equipment, maintenance requirements, and general operations including common polymer processing equipment such as extrusion, compression molding, injection molding, blow molding, blown film, etc.
- Knowledge of industry standard ISO, automotive, plastic pipe, UL, etc. testing and listing requirements
- Knowledge of safety and quality management systems
- Individual will need to be able to prioritize multiple activities across the site and effectively communicate across functions
- Preferred:
- Understanding of polymer material science and structure/property relationships
- Knowledge of the CBW/BMC/Carson sites, SHE policies and procedures and the maintenance practices of the BMC site.
