General Job Summary:

Under the general direction of the Director, Processing & Operational Logistics, or approved designee, and in conjunction with the Material Logistics Coordinator, the Material Technician is responsible for ensuring the satellite location is adequately stocked with clinical supplies, instruments, equipment, and other materials required for clinical operations. This position monitors par levels, submits requests to maintain those par levels, and ensures that all supplies are prepared for clinical use. The Materials Technician also works in conjunction with several departments to perform a variety of duties associated with the storing and rotating of clinical supplies and equipment maintenance and assists with facilities maintenance.

This position must work in accordance with local, state, and industry standards to ensure safety and quality and is responsible for maintaining open and free hallways and other common area spaces (i.e., loading dock area).  Position may require some travel to the corporate office, as well as some weekend and night coverage based on staffing levels and organizational needs. 

Education and Experience:

  1. Some college work preferred.  
  2. 1 – 2 years in supply management preferred. 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Knowledge of and ability to use a personal computer and all Microsoft office applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, as well as trouble shooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to define problems and resolve them quickly.
  • Ability to maintain an attention to detail while working with changing priorities and strict deadlines.
  • Must be a self-starter who can work well with people at all levels both in and out of the physical plant.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Maintains established par levels for clinical materials for the satellite location.
  2. Conducts weekly inventory of clinical materials to forecast and proactively request replenishment based on established par levels.
  3. Ensures that incoming materials are stored in compliance with all regulatory and accrediting standards and policies.
  4. Serves as a superuser of the electronic inventory system.
  5. Performs supply management though the barcoding of materials, quality checks of lot numbers, labeling, expiration date monitoring/disposal and the routine stocking/rotation of designated supply areas.
  6. Utilizes an electronic inventory system for supply management including but not limited to functions such as kit creation, supply consumption/return & supply transfer and reconciliation for inventory compliance.
  7. Ensures daily stocking and rotation of supply storage areas with all necessary supplies for various IL departments and purposes.
  8. Organizes and assembles materials for use in donor cases for organ, tissue, and skin processing.
  9. Uses 5S principles for general housekeeping, maintenance, and organization of inventory areas.
  10. Works with IL departments to understand their clinical supply needs and in conjunction with the Materials Logistics Coordinator provides solutions and strategies accordingly. 
  11. Assists the Materials Logistics Coordinator in obtaining quality certificates for accuracy and compliance with specification sheets. 
  12. Conducts training of the electronic inventory system for new users and performs investigations when inventory discrepancies are identified. 
  13. Works in conjunction with the non-Clinical Departments to ensure all non-clinical supplies are received and delivered to the recipient or proper storage location.
  14. Assists with routine physical inventory counts and reconciliation. 
  15. Assists with temperature monitoring and response in the satellite location. 
  16. Assists with minor facility requests.
  17. Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions: 

This position requires consistent availability and frequent travel, along with certain physical, language, and communication abilities, including:

  1. Work requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds, at times for intervals exceeding one hour.
  2. Work requires occasional use of a computer screen which may produce visual fatigue.
  3. Work requires attention to detail, flexibility in assignment changes, and meeting deadlines which may produce mental fatigue.
  4. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate telephones and computers.
  5. Ability to accurately communicate, converse, and exchange information in English over the telephone and in person.
  6. Computer literacy in a Microsoft Windows environment and demonstrated competency in the use of Microsoft Office software programs.
  7. Work requires frequent standing and walking for moving and stocking supplies.
  8. Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, pharmacological agents, with likelihood of harm if established health precautions are not followed.
  9. This position is Level 2 – Minimal level of exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and TB.  Employees may at times be in a hospital setting and may have exposure to packaged organs and tissues for transplant and/or research.
