General Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Clinical Manager, Donor Services - Organ, or appropriate designee, and in accordance with established procedures, the Organ Placement Coordinator 1 receives, evaluates, and coordinates organ import offers for local transplant centers. The Organ Placement Coordinator 1 is responsible for the organ placement for transplant and research, coordination of transportation, and communication to transplant center staff for all local and import organ donors. Frequent communication with transplant surgeons and transplant coordinators.

Position requires 3 (12 hour) shifts per week, and a minimum of 2 on-call shifts per month. Shifts are 0700-1900 or 1900-0700, must be able to work overnight, weekends and holidays. Must be flexible. Remote work potential.

Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in nursing, EMS, healthcare studies, or biology. 4 years of relevant experience in medical field or health sciences (EMT, Paramedic, LPN, EMS dispatcher) and/or equivalent work experience may be substituted for education, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  2. Knowledge of basic medical terminology and human anatomy.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Works in conjunction with appropriate Infinite Legacy staff during local organ cases. Collaborates closely with clinical personnel during donor management to facilitate organ allocation, arrange transportation of specimens and recovery teams, and acts as point of communication throughout donation process for transplant centers.
  2. Provides effective communication regarding appropriate medical information related to local and import donor organ function to transplant centers.
  3. Arranges ground and air transportation for recovering surgical teams, perfusionists, and other team members for local donors and import organ offers.
  4. Adheres to Organ Procurement and Transplant Network (OPTN)/United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policies for organ allocation.
  5. Facilitates import organ offers with on call surgeons and coordinators. Responsible for communication and logistical coordination of potential and accepted import organ donor cases.
  6. Communicates directly with the on-call surgeon(s), on-call transplant coordinator(s), and tissue typing lab(s) during local and import organ cases to relay pertinent donor information, organ function and visualization and arranges transportation of specimens and organs. Reports and provides required documentation and follow-up information to appropriate parties.
  7. Responsible for research allocation. Coordinates with research partners and recovery teams.

Working Conditions:

This position requires consistent availability, travel, and certain physical, language, and communication abilities, including:

  1. Possible mental and visual fatigue associated with detail work in completion of forms and use of a computer screen.
  2. Occasional need to transfer organs, blood specimens, and/or tissue samples from one location to another within the office building.
  3. Manual dexterity sufficient to operate telephones and computers.
  4. Ability to accurately communicate, converse, and exchange information in English over the telephone and in person.
  5. Computer literacy in a Microsoft Windows environment and demonstrated competency in the use of Microsoft Office software programs.
  6. Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents, with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed
  7. May require extended hours of sitting. May also require some physical effort lifting, pushing, and pulling supplies, equipment, and carts with little likelihood for injury if proper body mechanics and procedures are followed only as needed to assist.
  8. This position is Level 2 – Minimal level of exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens and TB. Employees may at times be in a hospital setting and may have exposure to packaged organs and tissues for transplant and/or research.
