Job Summary:
The Data Collection Staff will play a vital role in assisting the State with its statutory responsibilities related to sex and violent offender registration. The incumbent will research and collect court documents to enhance criminal history records and support registration efforts across multiple jurisdictions, including Indiana, other states, military, and federal systems. This position reports to the Sex and Violent Offender Registration and Victim Services Division of the Indiana Department of Correction.
Position Type: Full-time, in-office
Schedule: Monday to Friday
Key Responsibilities:
- Research & Collection:
- Research and collect court documents and sentencing information from local, state, federal, and military jurisdictions.
- Analyze and interpret collected documents to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Data Entry & Tracking:
- Enter collected data into a designated tracking system.
- Maintain accurate records for ongoing registration efforts.
- Communication & Collaboration:
- Communicate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies regarding data collection and offender registration.
- Establish and maintain working relationships with department personnel and external stakeholders.
- Miscellaneous:
- Perform other related duties as assigned by division staff.
Essential Qualifications:
- Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience gathering and processing documentation, preferably related to criminal justice.
- Legal research experience (e.g., Lexis Nexis, Westlaw, INcite, Doxpop) is highly desired.
- Familiarity with criminal history records (Triple Is, conviction/sentencing docs, probable cause affidavits, etc.) is highly preferred.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and interpret criminal and administrative codes, policies, procedures, and legal documents.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to maintain discretion when handling sensitive or confidential information.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge:
- Broad knowledge of the Indiana Code and the criminal justice system.
- Familiarity with national criminal justice resources and legal terminology.
