Construction Inspector Trainee – Salem District, VA
Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is actively seeking a Construction Inspector Trainee to join our Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) team supporting various transportation projects with the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Transportation. This position will work out of the Salem District area but will cover other areas as needed.

The Construction Inspector Trainee will be a trainee position, and as such, responsibilities will be in a training capacity.

Monitor the work of contractors to ensure quality control and contract compliance for roadway, structure, and bridge construction projects, under the direction of a Construction Manager or their designee

Inspects excavations, drainage structures, traffic control devices, road surfaces, and structures by comparing work performed to plans and specifications

Maintains project records including daily inspector report, workbook and materials records

Assist in preparing project records and forming reports

Receives on-the-job and required agency classroom training to obtain designated highway material certifications
Education and Experience Requirements
- HS diploma or equivalent required.
- 0-3 years of experience
- Must complete the following safety courses within 6 months of hire: OSHA 10, Work Zone Traffic Control, Personal Fall Arrest Systems: Fall Protection, and Confined Space Entry & Self Rescue - Competent Person.
- Must complete the following Core Construction Inspection Courses within 6 months of hire: Plan Reading and Construction Math, Surveying for Inspectors, Documentation and Recordkeeping, Roadway Construction & Drainage, Structures & Bridge, and SiteManager.

Basic knowledge of mathematics including computation of length, area and volumetric measurements

Willingness to learn and apply new information and concepts

Functional computer usage including familiarity with Microsoft office suite software

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Current driver’s license with safe 3-year driving record is required.
- A valid Driver's License is required with a safe driving record and must complete a pre-employment screening.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Physical Demands
This position requires minimal lifting of up to 50 pounds sometimes on a frequent basis. The employee must be able to travel and tour work sites under adverse environmental conditions not limited to loud noise levels, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperature. The employee must be able to visually examine construction materials and finished structures and work in various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites and heavy equipment.
Expected Hours of Work
This position is full-time (40 hours per week). Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing one unpaid hour for lunch each day. While overtime is generally not anticipated, occasional projects or deadlines may necessitate additional hours, compensated according to company policy. Flexible schedules may be available with prior approval from the immediate supervisor. Work schedules may vary based on project demands.
