Geotechnical Engineer - Virginia Beach, VA
Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is seeking a Geotechnical Engineer to join our team in Virginia Beach, VA to support various heavy civil construction and transportation projects throughout the Southeast. We currently perform deep foundation testing and geotechnical engineering services on bridge and pier projects, large heavy civil construction projects, port expansions, and on military bases throughout Hampton Roads and Virginia.
The Geotechnical Engineer will work under the guidance of the Senior Geotechnical Engineer and will be responsible for conducting geotechnical analyses and designs for infrastructure projects such as roadways, bridges, retaining walls, soils, asphalt, pavement, and rock slopes. They will develop and perform subsurface investigation and laboratory testing plans and review boring logs and laboratory data. The engineer will contribute to the design plans for a variety of geotechnical projects, including slope stability, foundation design, seismic analysis, and other geotechnical considerations. Job duties also include structural design using relevant design specifications and compliance with state and local requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform a variety of field foundation and geotechnical testing, analyze collected data, and provide timely reporting of test results under the supervision of the Geotechnical Testing Manager.
- Primarily work in South Carolina, with projects across the Southeast including North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, and Alabama.
- Collaborate with the geotechnical group and assist with geotechnical design as needed under the supervision of the senior engineer.
- Maintain organized documentation/archives of design files, drawings, and construction submittals.
- Foster proactive communication with the geotechnical group, other disciplines, clients, and subconsultants.
- Provide construction assistance and respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) as necessary.
- Engage in design-build pursuits across all states that ICE operates in.
- Provide mentorship and training to geotechnical staff in areas of expertise.
- Attend conferences as needed.
Qualifications
- Proficiency in MicroStation and commonly used geotechnical engineering software.
- Familiarity with job cost, scheduling, safety, and construction concepts.
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. with a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.

Education and Experience Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field with a Geotechnical concentration is required.
- Master of Civil Engineering with a Geotechnical concentration is preferred.
- Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is required; Professional Engineer (PE) certification is desired.
- 7-10 years of geotechnical experience is required.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
- Must have reliable transportation to attend meetings or make field visits on short notice.
- Willingness to travel up to 50% of the time to various projects located in the Southeast.
- Ability to visually observe and differentiate details and colors of objects.
- Ability to recognize sound, tone, and pitch, and effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
- Adaptability to interruptions and changes.
- Comfortable sitting for extended periods and working in hot, cold, and noisy work areas, as well as standing and walking when visiting job sites.
Physical Demands
- This position requires minimal lifting, up to 40 pounds on an infrequent basis.
- Hand and eye coordination is necessary for computer data entry, operating surveying equipment, calculators, and concrete testing equipment.
- Ability to travel and visit work sites under adverse environmental conditions, including loud noise levels, high dust and dirt, and extreme temperatures.
- Ability to visually examine construction materials and finished infrastructure structures.
Expected Hours of Work
- This is a full-time position (40 hours per week).
- The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Some night and weekend work may be required to supervise site investigations.
