Location: Statewide – Raleigh, Charlotte, and Various M&T and Producer Facilities in North Carolina.

Responsibilities
- Inspection & Testing:
- Perform field and laboratory testing on materials such as pavements, liquid asphalt, asphalt mix, concrete, soil, aggregate, steel, and other miscellaneous materials.
- Conduct inspections and certifications for materials and construction projects.
- Utilize equipment for density, sampling, and quality assurance testing (e.g., nuclear density gauge).
- Analysis & Documentation:
- Analyze material data and generate detailed reports.
- Document findings and procedures in compliance with NCDOT and federal standards.
- Audit producer facilities and evaluate compliance with certification requirements.
- Training & Development:
- Assist in developing training materials and conducting training sessions for internal and external stakeholders.
- Support the certification of technicians by guiding them through required coursework.
- Project Support:
- Contribute to the design, review, and analysis of typical sections and pavement systems.
- Perform quality assurance and quality control functions as assigned.
Qualifications
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.
- Must complete a pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.
- Proficiency in basic computer applications and data entry.
- Familiarity with testing equipment and laboratory procedures.
Education and Experience Requirements
- Engineering Technician certification or equivalent qualification a plus.
- NCDOT experience in materials testing, inspection, and quality assurance preferred.

Additional Requirements
- Transportation & Travel:
- Must be willing and able to travel to assigned locations as required.
- Firm will provide a vehicle for assignments involving travel to multiple locations; mileage reimbursement will be negotiated.
- Training:
- Must be willing to attend specialized training and certification programs provided by NCDOT.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
The role involves moderate physical activity such as walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders. Employees may occasionally lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds. It is essential for employees to navigate construction sites skillfully and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures.
Employees must have the ability to visually discern and differentiate details and colors of objects, and proficiency in recognizing sound, tone, and pitch. Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills are necessary. The role demands adaptability to interruptions and changes in workflow, as well as the capacity to sit for extended periods. Employees must be capable of working in varied environmental conditions, including hot, cold, and noisy settings, and be able to stand and walk during site visits. Additionally, working on construction projects may involve night work and weekend work depending on the project scope and may include working in conditions with active traffic.
Expected Hours of Work
- The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily.
- Work schedules may vary according to the project schedule.
- Work assignments may be in central facilities or M&T facilities statewide.
- Supervised daily by the Department manager responsible for the Materials and Tests Unit.
