Position: Director of Finance
Reports to: Superintendent
Job Goals: The Director of Finance and Community Education is responsible for executing the District’s vision of providing an exemplary K-12 education that equips students for success in 21st-century scholarship, citizenship, and leadership. This role oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of the District’s financial operations and community education programs, including the Performing Arts Center (Alverson Theater) and the Recreation Department. Collaborating closely with the Superintendent, the Director ensures that financial strategies and community education initiatives align with the values, vision, and goals of the Fowlerville Community and the Board of Education. The Director also fosters community engagement through innovative and inclusive programs that serve students, families, and residents.
Qualifications:
- A minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, with a Master's Degree in Educational Administration, Accounting, or a related field; CPA certification is strongly preferred.
- At least five (5) years of demonstrated administrative and leadership experience in school business operations.
- Current Michigan School Business Officials (MSBO) Chief Financial Officer (CFO) certification is preferred.
- Proven track record of collaborative leadership and the ability to build strong working relationships with employee groups and bargaining units.
- Experience with school financial accounting systems and related software operations.
- Strong ability to create and deliver presentations, effectively communicating with administrators, community groups, and the Board of Education.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Finance
- Oversee the management of the district’s financial affairs, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Take responsibility for the development of the annual budget and long-term financial planning for the district.
- Attend Board meetings, serve on the Superintendent’s Cabinet, and provide expert advice to the Superintendent on all matters related to business, financial operations, and district affairs.
- Supervise the collection, safekeeping, and distribution of district funds.
- Manage the district’s real estate, risk management, and insurance programs.
- Meet regularly with the Finance Committee of the Board of Education, offering support as needed.
- Oversee the capital improvement plan and manage the financial aspects of district operations.
- Participate in the negotiation of employment contracts for organized employee groups.
- Supervise, direct, and evaluate the Business Office staff to ensure efficiency and compliance.
- Administer and maintain a robust budget control system for the district.
- Develop budget guidelines, coordinate budget preparation, and assist key administrators in reviewing budget proposals.
- Oversee the preparation, publication, and distribution of the budget, ensuring alignment with Board and Superintendent approval.
- Coordinate the presentation, justification, and preparation of additional analyses to support the budget proposal for action by the Board of Education.
- Manage school assessments, tax levies, collections, and the development of Board policies and administrative procedures.
- Supervise purchasing processes, including competitive bidding, informal quotations, and negotiations for supplies and equipment necessary for district operations.
- Prepare all bidding documents, including notices to bidders, instructions, specifications, and proposal forms.
- Provide strategic planning and financial oversight for capital improvement and bond-related projects.
- Ensure that district records management procedures comply with all legal requirements.
- Arrange for the auditing of school accounts to ensure transparency and accuracy.
- Adhere to all applicable statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Oversee Alverson Center and Community Recreation programming
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
Community Education
- Provides leadership for the Performing Arts Center (Alverson Theater) and the Recreation Department under the Community Education umbrella.
- Direct the development and implementation of enrichment classes, before and after-school programs, preschool initiatives, and summer school programs.
- Collaborate with community stakeholders, organizations, service clubs, advisory councils, and district staff to enhance program offerings and maintain effective communication.
- Provide strategic planning and financial oversight for community education programs, ensuring they are self-sustaining and financially viable.
- Plan and implement marketing strategies for community education and district initiatives.
- Assist in writing and implementing grants to support district community education programs.
- Works with staff to develop educational initiatives for parent training from prenatal to high school graduation.
- Maintain positive relations and communication with district patrons, staff, and administrators.
- Supervise and evaluate community education personnel, including staff for enrichment programs, theater operations, and recreational activities.
- Develop and implement training and professional development programs for community education staff.
- Work with community agencies to provide services and resources that support students and families.
Salary & Benefits:
