Summary

Under the supervision of the WIC Program Manager, the WIC Degreed Nutritionist (DN) is responsible for providing counseling and nutrition education to WIC participants, including participants who have been identified as having a high-risk nutritional need. This position will determine program eligibility of WIC applicants and participants. This position will provide breastfeeding and nutrition education, counseling, and case management for WIC participants in accordance to policies and procedures established by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) WIC Department and Inland Behavioral and Health Services, Inc. (IBHS). This position will participate in activities that support the agency’s caseload, breastfeeding, and departmental goals.

Responsibilities

• Greet and promote positive working relationships with clients, families, and IBHS staff.
• Answer and respond to participant calls, texts, and/or emails within a timely manner utilizing appropriate etiquette.
• Provide group and individual education and counseling on nutrition, breastfeeding, and other health related topics.
• Conduct thorough nutrition assessments utilizing available anthropometric, biochemical, environmental, and food/nutrition related information for WIC participants.
• Utilize the WIC Information System Exchange (WIC WISE) to correctly schedule and document nutrition assessments, education, appointment contact types, follow up plans, and assign/exchange/issue appropriate food packages.
• Review and process all therapeutic formula and WIC-eligible nutritional requests ensuring documentation is complete and appropriate for the participant’s medical diagnosis. Communicate with health care providers as needed to obtain accurate, necessary participant information either verbally or in writing (i.e. WIC Referral Form).
• Provide and document referrals to other community resources based on participant need.
• Model positive behavior amongst staff and participants promoting breastfeeding as the normal first choice for infant feeding.
• Assist with new hire training; provide ongoing guidance and coaching to WIC staff on nutrition education and utilization of WIC WISE.

Knowledge and Education: A bachelor’s degree in a nutrition-related field is required. Knowledge and experience utilizing Participant-Centered Education (PCE), Motivational Interviewing (MI), and Stages of Change (Transtheoretical) methodology preferred. Excellent verbal/written communication skills required. Successful completion of the WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) certification training within one year of employment. Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred, but not required.

Experience: A minimum of one-year experience in WIC, community nutrition, or public health field preferred. Knowledge of the WIC program and maternal child health desired.

Skills: Must be able to type at least 30 words/min and utilize computer technology proficiently (Microsoft software, video conferencing, fax, email, and text.). Ability to relate to and work

with people of all ages, social and ethnic backgrounds, maintaining participant confidentiality. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to convey a sense of confidence and trust to all participants. Ability to relate well to other health professionals and exercise sound judgment.

Pay: $25.44 - $27.48 per hour
