Job Title : Managing Attorney (Pro Bono), Law Student and Local Volunteer Programs

Classification : Exempt

Reports To : Pro Bono Director

Supervises : As Assigned

Compensation : $95,000.00 - $122,000.00 (Depending On Experience)

ICLS is seeking a Managing Attorney (Pro Bono) to expand and manage its Local Volunteer Programs, oversee student programs, and build and expand local volunteer programs.  ICLS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing free legal services to people of limited means residing in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. ICLS targets services to seniors and those in the greatest social and economic need. ICLS has eight practice groups : Elder, Family Law, Consumer, Housing, Immigration, Systemic & Impact Litigation, Health Law, and Public Benefits & Education; and a Pro Bono Program, operating volunteer-enhanced client programs. Overview of Position & Responsibilities

Under supervision of the Pro Bono Director, the core responsibilities for this position are :

Build a Signature, Robust Local Volunteer Program :

Building and overseeing the day-to-day running of a robust local service delivery program, involving in-person legal assistance, periodically, at strategic community locations (e.g., community colleges, libraries, etc.) in ICLS’ service region.

Developing training for staff and volunteers participating in this program, including substantive law and logistics; and strategically expanding the program.

Overseeing grant applications & compliance; applying for additional funding.

Overseeing ICLS’ Student Programs :

Overseeing ICLS’ student programs, including the Summer Law Clerk Program; Fall, Spring & Winter Internship Programs; College Academy, and others.

Overseeing at least one legal clinic with a law school to be replicated throughout the year and providing adequate training and oversight of students.

Being responsible for student volunteers, including onboarding, training, case management as appropriate, collecting hours, enforcing policies and procedures, and collaborating with advocates at ICLS as needed.

Overseeing grant compliance; identifying and applying for additional funding.

Managing Local Volunteer Initiatives :

Overseeing ICLS’ local volunteer programs, including with local law firms, solo practitioners, bar associations, and other groups.

Overseeing legal clinics with local volunteers, including training and oversight.

Being responsible for volunteers, including onboarding, training, case management as appropriate, collecting hours, among other things.

Management Specialties :

The Managing Attorney will have a particular emphasis on supporting the Pro Bono Team in meeting case / client-related goals and compliance, including development of compliance policies, practices and procedures, in partnership with ICLS’s Compliance Task Force, in accordance with appropriate policies and regulations.

The Managing Attorney will also have a particular emphasis on supporting processes related to new volunteer applications and onboarding through the California Pro Bono Portal (and other volunteer platforms), focusing on solo practitioners, small law firms, law students, and non-lawyer volunteers.

The Managing Attorney will also assist the Pro Bono Director with the following other management tasks, as needed :

Reviewing timekeeping and expense reports.

Drafting annual employee evaluations and work plans.

Onboarding new staff and training on practice group-specific rules and subject matter.

Identifying staff training / development needs and helping to locate resources.

Ensuring case compliance for the Pro Bono Team.

Overseeing team-specific grant requirements - meetings, reports, etc.

Helping to identify potential funding opportunities related to the practice area.

Overseeing the quality and accuracy of legal work performed by the team's advocates, particularly non-attorneys.

Qualifications :

Degree from law school and active member of the California Bar in good standing;

At least 4 years of legal experience;

At least 3 years of experience working with and / or managing pro bono opportunities;

Excellent writing, analytical, organizational, communication skills;

Demonstrated commitment to race, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and experience collaborating with individuals from diverse communities;

Strong project management skills, including organization and ability to multi-task;

Ability to work independently and as part of a team;

Ability to supervise volunteers, including students and paralegals;

Ability to lead and collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders;

Ability to read, write, and communicate in English, with Spanish being a plus; and

Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint proficiency.
