Who we are and what we do:
The Tennessee Inmate Disciplinary Oversight Board is a full-time, autonomous state board. The purpose of the board is to review the grant, denial, and removal of inmate sentence credits by a warden for good institutional behavior and to determine whether sentence credits previously awarded should be removed for the commission of a major infraction designated by the department as a Class A disciplinary offense or for an inmate's refusal to participate in an assignment. The board is composed of nine (9) members appointed by the governor, the speaker of the Senate, and the speaker of the House of Representatives. The board is autonomous in structure and is, in all respects, separate functionally and administratively from any other agency.
Job Overview:
The person in this position will report to the agency Executive Director and the Commission Board and provides legal advice, representation, and guidance to their agency on a wide range of issues. The position is hybrid in that the work will allow for some work at home but there will be responsibilities that also require the person in this position to report to the office. Some travel may be required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Advises on legal, regulatory, procedural, and/or personnel matters for agency and assists in the planning and research of special projects.
- Reviews, researches, interprets, and prepares both written and oral opinions on legal issues related to corrections.
- Drafts, reviews, and approves policies, procedures, regulations, bylaws, and other legal documents.
- Ensures compliance with state policy and procedure as well as TCA for the agency mandates.
- Serves as part of the executive leadership team and advises the executive director and commission members.
- Prepares materials for presentations, speeches, and informational forums. Represents the agency at hearings and other legal proceedings as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- An active License to practice law in Tennessee is required.
- Preferred Experience: Minimum of 5 years of relevant legal experience with Corrections.
- Minimum of 1 year of senior management/supervisory experience.
