Position Title: Grounds Maintenance Equipment Operator

Reports To: Golf Maintenance Superintendent

Supervises: N/A

Summary of Position


The Grounds Maintenance Equipment Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining various equipment used for the upkeep and care of grounds, including lawns, landscaping, and outdoor facilities. This role involves ensuring the safe and efficient use of machinery such as mowers, tractors, and loaders, while performing general grounds keeping tasks.

  • Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following and are subject to change at management’s discretion:
  • Safely operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment, including but not limited to, mowers, tractors, loaders, edgers, trimmers, blowers, and other landscaping tools.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks on equipment before use, such as checking oil levels, tire pressure, and fuel.
  • Report and document any malfunctions, damages, or repairs needed for equipment and assist in the troubleshooting of mechanical issues.
  • Mow, edge, trim, and maintain lawns, fields, and landscaped areas using appropriate machinery.
  • Assist with planting, pruning, fertilizing, mulching, and watering of trees, shrubs, flowers, and lawns to ensure healthy growth.
  • Collect and dispose of leaves, branches, and other debris to keep outdoor areas clean and tidy.
  • Apply fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other treatments as directed to control pests, diseases, or weeds.
  • Perform snow removal, including plowing, shoveling, and salting walkways and driveways during winter months.
  • Assist with fall clean-up, leaf removal, and preparation of grounds for seasonal changes.
  • Help set up and break down outdoor areas for special events or seasonal activities.
  • Follow all safety protocols and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while operating equipment and performing grounds keeping tasks.
  • Ensure that equipment is operated in a safe and efficient manner, adhering to all company and regulatory safety guidelines.
  • Keep work areas free from hazards and ensure that machinery is stored properly after use.
  • Conduct basic preventive maintenance on grounds equipment, such as cleaning, lubricating, and replacing parts as needed.
  • Maintain accurate logs of equipment usage, fuel consumption, and maintenance activities.
  • Assist in ordering supplies, parts, and tools needed for grounds maintenance operations.
  • Work closely with the grounds keeping team to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient workflow.
  • Report to the Grounds Supervisor or Manager on the status of projects, equipment needs, and any grounds-related concerns.
  • Interact courteously with staff, residents, and visitors when performing duties in public areas.

  • 1-3 years of experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, or a similar role preferred.
  • Experience operating grounds maintenance equipment such as mowers, tractors, and loaders is required.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot and perform basic maintenance on equipment.
  • Good understanding of landscaping, lawn care, and horticultural practices.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Certification or licensing to operate specific heavy equipment (such as tractors or loaders) is a plus.
  • Pesticide application certification is an advantage but not required.

While performing the duties of this position, the team member is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands, to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk or hear. Must be able to use hand held communications devices. The team member must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The team member must be able to stand for several hours.
