Description
To achieve the mission of the Innovation Charter School, teachers at Innovation ensure that our student-innovators work to achieve rigorous academic goals. Specifically, these teachers co-plan, co-instruct, and co-assess students in the mainstream classroom. Our teachers develop, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in an inclusive learning environment to enable all students to fulfill their academic potential.
Minimum Qualifications:
- In most cases, teachers must possess and maintain New York State Permanent, Professional, or Initial Teaching Certification 7-12 or K- 12 in Visual Arts.
- One to three years of classroom teaching in an urban setting and a bachelor’s degree, though a master’s degree is preferred.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Implement inclusive instructional model:
- Planning lessons on art, art history, and contemporary art styles in accordance with students' learning objectives.
- Preparing the classroom by gathering and setting up equipment and ensuring that the classroom is clean after each lesson.
- Developing students' drawing, coloring, and painting techniques.
- Providing instruction on the use of media such as graphite and charcoal pencils, as well as oil, acrylic, and watercolor paint.
- Assigning and grading projects and examinations.
- Monitor inventory and sourcing art supplies, as needed.
- Collaborate with special education colleagues to fully meet the mandates of IEPs and ensure that all students have access to the curriculum.
- Create and implement lesson plans based on Innovation’s 3-tier model: core curriculum, experiential learning, and project-based learning.
- Work closely with peers and administration to shape and deliver a multifaceted curriculum that integrates multiple subjects and approaches to meet the individual needs of our students
- Incorporate student goals, behavior plans, and interventions into daily instruction and create and maintain daily lesson and unit plans that are standards-based and mission-aligned.
- Maintain an active culture of inquiry and a positive learning environment within the classroom.
Adjust instruction based on student data
- Consistently review classroom performance data and evolve your approach to obtain maximum results.
- Read and understand students’ IEP goals and attend all subject and grade team meetings.
- Timely and accurately report student progress and maintain accurate and up-to-date achievement records (adhering to standards-based grading practices, grade books, and student achievement portfolios).
Develop professional skills that increase capacity to service students:
- Identifying and creating professional development opportunities to expand your skills to meet the demands of individual student needs.
- Completing a minimum of 40 hours of professional development per year.
- Taking an active part in professional learning communities meetings and curriculum committee meetings.
- Learning to optimize and incorporate technology into daily routine by taking part in digital knowledge-sharing and communication.
Provide students with mission-critical support services:
- Implement full-time instruction/supervision for planning and instructing classes held during our school’s Enrichment Week.
- Host a minimum of two hours of weekly supplemental instruction (in school tutoring or open office hours to provide academic support services) OR provide supervision of a co-curricular team, class, club, or program
- Facilitate daily advisor responsibilities, including dissemination of daily announcements, academic conferencing with advisees, and strategic communications with advisees’ parents on student performance.

Evaluation
Teacher performance is formally appraised during evaluation cycles that occur at least two times during the school year. Appraisals are transparent, collaborative, intended to promote professional growth, and based on the accomplishment of the goals and responsibilities outlined above.
Salary & Benefits
This is a full-time position. Innovation teachers certified in NYS currently receive the amount on the UFT-DOE salary schedule 3%. Uncertified teachers receive competitive compensation and a substantial increase upon getting certified.
