Summary
The At-Risk Counselor works with the Student Support Team and utilizes leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, to promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive counseling program that addresses the academic, career, and personal/social development goals for students who are referred via Innovation HS’s at-risk programs. Ultimately, the major responsibility of the at-risk counselor is to provide social and emotional support or interventions for all students in pursuit of the school’s mission. This includes brief intervention and crisis management counseling services.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide at-risk counseling for students who require additional services, interventions, and attention, on an ongoing and emergency basis.
- Read and understand the behavior plan for each student in your caseload.
- Maintain records of counseling sessions.
- Collect data to improve students’ progress. Such data can include Student Behavioral observations and, if necessar,y a Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA);
- Facilitate child study teams to identify needs and create plans for students in need of more intense interventions
- Collaborate with grade team counselors, teachers, and support staff to monitor student growth and progress;
- Develop Behavioral Goals and Interventions with Students and Teachers;
- Collaborate across teams to create a framework of support for at-risk students.
- Provide crisis intervention, group, and individual counseling when needed, collaborate with the Student Support Team (SST) when necessary to address any student crisis;
- Co-facilitate a daily student leadership course that works with students struggling with attendance, behavio,r and credit accrual, as well as students often being excluded from the community due to physical altercations and large classroom disruptions
- Work closely with teachers to develop strong collaborative relationships to support student social/emotional development and academic success.
- Communicate frequently with students, students’ families, colleagues, outside service providers, and other school staff about the goals, social/emotional issues, and other related issues;
- Facilitate re-entry, restorative meetings for students with temporary removal.
- Plan and facilitate professional development for staff
- Take an active role in your professional development by identifying and creating opportunities to expand your skills and the skills of your colleagues.
- Participate in home visits for at-risk students;
- Collaborate with community organizations and school staff to implement prevention and intervention programs;
- Other duties as required by the Principal.
Qualifications:
- NY State Certification as School Counselor
- Minimum of two years of Guidance Counseling; 4-6 years of experience preferred
- Strong belief in and ability to implement the Innovation’s mission and vision
- Demonstrated background in strong student support and interpersonal skills by bringing passion and depth of knowledge to your responsibilities.
- Ability to provide counseling in on one, group, and push-in settings
- Demonstrated leadership by taking an active part in professional learning communities meetings and student meetings.
- Actively engage professional development practices. Embrace school culture by becoming a leader and innovator in a way that is empowering, inspiring, and unique to you.
- Excellent organizational skills to maintain records, review data daily, and amend your approach accordingly. Includesthe ability to incorporate technology into daily routine by utilizing Innovation’s Student Information System to stay plugged into all school activities.
Preferred Experiences:
Candidates with experience in substance abuse counseling, trauma-informed approaches, and gang prevention and intervention programs.
Supervisor:
The Principal and/or their designee.
Evaluation
Teacher performance is formally appraised during evaluation cycles that occur at least two times during the school year. Appraisals are transparent, collaborative, intended to promote professional growth, and based on accomplishment of the major goals and responsibilities outlined in your job description.
