Summary:
In furtherance of Innovation’s mission, ELL/ENL Teachers at Innovation ensure that our student-innovators will achieve rigorous academic goals by setting self-created, individualized educational goals within a three-tiered educational model of core classroom instruction, portfolio-based annual individual projects, and hands-on, experiential learning. Specifically, ELL/ENL Teachers either lead or co-plan, co-instruct, and co-assess students in the mainstream classroom. Under the direction of the Languages Department Chair, ELL/ENL teachers collaborate with general education teachers to develop, organize, and implement an appropriate instructional program in an inclusive learning environment that guides and encourages ALL students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Serve as the ENL case-manager for an assigned group of students and document monthly contact.
- Implement ENL interventions, support services, and strategies into an integrated classroom and coach the general education teachers of the remaining content areas on said goals and strategies.
- Lead classroom differentiation for ENL students through curricular modifications, instructional techniques, parallel instruction, small group pull-outs, and integrated classroom strategies that meet individuals’ needs.
- Communication with teachers (frequently) to assess student progress toward meeting ILP Measurable Annual Goals
- Coordinate/collaborate with IEP service providers/other teachers where appropriate to ensure effective wraparound services and support for ELL students
- Administer pre-assessments and NYSESLAT Assessment
- Assess and develop goals for the Individual Learning Plan for all ELL students and monitor the progress of students on the assigned caseload.
- Collect and analyze academic performance data from all academic courses
- Review student achievement and performance data daily and amend your instructional approach accordingly
- Interpret MAP student performance testing data and align with differentiated and individualized classroom instruction.
- Regularly and accurately report student progress and maintain accurate and up-to-date records related to student achievement, performance, and ELL/ENL goals in the case management system.
- Create ENL teacher report and email to Department Chair by the designated submission date
- Communicate frequently with students, students’ families, colleagues, and other school management team members.
- Prepare for, attend, and participate in parent-teacher conferences and Child Study Teams as a student and family advocate.
- Attend parent-teacher conferences and take an active role in school-community outreach
- Regularly attend ENL Department meetings in addition to the content area department meetings
- Strong understanding and ability to implement Innovation's mission and vision.
- Take an active role in your professional development by identifying and creating opportunities to expand your skills to meet the demands of individual student needs.
- Complete a minimum of 40 hours of professional development per year.
- Full-time instruction/supervision during Enrichment Week planning, pre-course classes, and courses during Enrichment Week
- Commit to and provide a minimum of two hours of weekly supplemental instruction (tutorials or open office hours to provide academic support services) OR provide supervision of a co-curricular team, class, club, or program
- Teach classes and perform the associated duties of a classroom instructor for the assigned department, including:
- Create and implement lesson plans based on Innovation’s 3-tier model of core curriculum, hands-on, experiential learning, and project-based learning
- Work closely with peers and administration to develop a multifaceted curriculum that integrates multiple subjects and approaches and provides opportunities to develop student leadership
- Take an entrepreneurial approach to your curriculum, teaching methods, and optional duties
- Maintain an awareness of the school’s strategic initiatives and incorporate them into your work, including working with partner organizations
- Communicate frequently with students and students’ families via phone, email, home visits or face-to-face meetings
- Additional duties as assigned by the Principal or his/her designee.
Minimum Qualifications:
- New York State Teaching Certification in ESL 7-12 is required.
- Dual certification in a Foreign Language 7-12 is preferred.
- Three to five years of classroom experience is preferred.
Supervisor:
The Principal and/or their designee.
Evaluation
Teacher performance is formally appraised during evaluation cycles that occur at least two times during the school year. Appraisals are transparent, collaborative, intended to promote professional growth, and based on the accomplishment of the major goals and responsibilities outlined in your job description.
