What are the responsibilities and job description for the Smart Home Technician position at Innovative Audio and Video LLC?
What are we looking for?
A kick-ass Technician/Installer
Where are we located?
Arlington, VA, outside of D.C.
Who would you report to?
Jon, our Owner. We think he’s pretty cool.
What kind of job is this?
Full-time. We’re a small team, so we’re looking for someone to put in a little extra effort from time to time!
Who are we?
Have you ever dreamt of walking in the front door of your home after a long workday, to have the lights automatically turn on, your blinds automatically close, your favorite tv channel queued up, and the heated floors in your bathroom warming up, all ready for you to decompress for the evening? What feels like a far-fetched dream is now becoming reality in the home automation and technology world.
Jon, our owner and founder, started installing car stereo systems for friends in high school. You could say he’s been a tech geek practically since birth. Jon founded Innovative Audio and Video in 2009, with a genuine commitment to his clients to provide outstanding customer service. Through this, we’ve earned the privilege of being clients’ “go-to” company for anything technology related. We’re not ones to oversell just for the sake of it, and we’re always going to strive to take pride in every job, big or small.
Are you a fanatic about customer service, but also love technology? What are you waiting for? Apply to become a part of our team!
What would a typical day look like?
As a Technician at Innovative AV, you’ll spend your time working in homes and businesses to install and integrate the latest in A/V and other automation technology.
Here’s how a typical week might look:
- On Monday, you might find yourself pulling wire at a residential home under construction;
- On Tuesday, you may be hanging televisions and mounting projectors in conference rooms for a local commercial business;
- On Wednesdays, we all fly to Vegas together and hit the casinos. (just kidding; we just wanted to make sure you’re still paying attention)
- You may end your week on Friday doing a few onsite visits to engage in some troubleshooting for existing client systems that couldn’t be resolved remotely.
At a more granular level, your days will consist of the following:
- Installation and service of audio/visual, networking, security and automation equipment in residential, commercial, and retail environments.
- Running and terminating low-voltage wiring during construction and after
- Trenching, conduit and landscape audio/lighting installation
- Interpreting floor plans and system designs
- Terminating head-end system components
- Understanding installation interfaces between control systems and subsystems
- Troubleshooting of audio, visual, and automation equipment
- Installing and setting up networks
- Programming Savant control systems
- Performing regular site visits for ongoing projects
- Providing regular progress reports to the rest of our team
If we’re lucky, your daily work will be planned and structured. However, priorities can shift at a moment’s notice. You must be comfortable with shifting focus and willing to be an active participant in juggling multiple demands. You should also be comfortable with keeping track of your time and writing detailed notes.
When the client is ready to use their technology for the first time, you’ll train them and answer all their questions. You will always be expected to treat our clients and your colleagues with patience and friendliness no matter how big or small their issue. Client service is something we hold sacred at our company so it is of the utmost importance that you be willing and able to serve as a helping hand for our clients in their moment of need.
What should you bring to the table?
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in low voltage, especially AV & custom technology integration
- Comprehensive knowledge and passion for residential systems integration including audio/video, lighting, shades, climate control, security, CCTV, telephone and networks
- Bonus points if you have experience with Savant specifically
- Extensive experience in a client-facing role- we’re working in and out of clients’ homes, so positive client interaction is huge!
- A degree is a nice bonus, but not required
- Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
- Reliable transportation and clean driving record
- A professional appearance at all times
- Excellent communication skills- both verbal and written
- A willingness to take on as your own, the company’s core values, purpose, cause and passion;
- A positive attitude, ability to excel under pressure, and a willingness to hold yourself accountable
