Summary:


Small family office seeking a hands-on, experienced CFO to oversee FP&A, investment management, and tax strategy working remotely or from New York City. Responsible for managing a full-time bookkeeper, vendors (external accountant, etc.) and interacting with the family principal on a daily basis.

Principal is a single entrepreneur in his 40s based in New York City, starting several companies in different technology and finance-related industries.

Skill sets:

  1. Accounting: 5 years of hands-on and management experience of an accounting function, responsible for monthly closings, G/L, GAAP research, preparation of financial statements, and other reporting.
  2. FP&A: 10 years of hands-on financial planning and analysis. Ability to think creatively and build dynamic financial models to assist with decision making processes.
  3. Tax: 5 years experience with different tax structures to reduce ETR, including pass-through entities, trusts and charitable donations.
  4. Investment performance analysis: Ideal candidate would have some experience analyzing performance of different investments and suggesting ways to optimize investment returns.


Responsibilities:

  1. Financial statement preparation: Responsible for compiling 12 entities, including wholly-owned LLCs and businesses owned by principal, into a monthly consolidating income statement and balance sheet. Detailed review of GL reports with variance analysis to identify trends. Preparation of Personal Financial Statements and other reports for bank compliance.
  2. Tax optimization: Proactively identify, research and present potential tax savings opportunities. Creatively working to reduce effective tax rate through donations, trusts, and other structures. Partner with CPA firm to research issues, understand risk and potential alternatives, and ensure compliance including timely filings and estimated payments.
  3. Investment management: Responsible for building reports to track and measure investment performance of outside financial advisors. Coordinate with financial advisors to discuss recommendations and implement strategies as determined by principal.
  4. Business and Trust involvement: Periodically get involved with principal’s businesses when resources are short or when a business is contemplating a sale process. Coordinate with principal’s businesses and family trust (professional trustee) regarding financial reporting, appraisals, tax strategy and compliance.
  5. Treasury and liquidity management: Partner with private banking team for execution of wire transfers and other treasury activities on a daily basis. Maintenance of principal’s cash accounts including user permissions, approvals and forecasting cash needs. Optimized use of bank products including both deposit accounts and debt facilities for maximum liquidity at minimal interest cost.
  6. Other: Other duties as assigned, including coordination and oversight of special projects such as real estate construction, life insurance, estate planning, M&A activity, etc.


Qualities of Successful Candidate:

  • Operates with a sense of urgency, with a 24/7 “always on” mentality. Principal prefers informal, iterative communication frequently on Slack
  • Work product is accurate and reliable, financial models are sound
  • Proactively offers solutions and ideas - does not merely react to requests
  • Treats assets of principal with same level of care as if they were his/her own


Measurements of Success Within First 12 Months:

  • Hire a full-time, mid-level accountant/bookkeeper to transition away from current full-time contractor resource
  • Create and improve investment performance reports for all investment accounts
  • Re-structure existing credit/margin facilities to expand borrowing capacity
  • Monitor and approve vendor payments for $50mm construction remodel
  • Implementation of better data (e.g. Quickbooks chart of accounts), more automated reporting, and timely investment performance analysis


Compensation, Benefits, Other:

  • Location: Based in New York City or remote
  • Salary: $175,000 - $250,000
  • Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision
  • Vacation: Standard holidays plus fifteen (15) days per year
