Position Description :

POSITION SUMMARY

This faculty position is a full-time, 100% FTE (10 Months) Tenure Track position as Instructor of Arts in the Division of Humanities, Social Sciences and Arts located at San Jose City College

Assignment may include day and evening responsibilities.

This position is represented by the San Jose / Evergreen Federation of Teachers, AFT 6157.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

San Jose City College seeks an equity minded art instructor for a full-time (10 months per year), tenure-track faculty position. Primary responsibilities will include teaching drawing, 2D foundations, painting, Art Appreciation and Art History courses, developing and reviewing department curriculum, and providing oversight and coordination for the campus art gallery with up to 10% of assigned load for gallery-related duties. Responsibilities of the position also includes equitable participation in the administrative duties related to the necessary operation of the art department, school, and college. This includes participation in departmental and division meetings, SLO assessment and program review, service on district and college-level committees, participation in professional development, community engagement and outreach. The ideal candidate has experience in teaching art to diverse student populations, possesses a strong background in 2D fundamentals with an emphasis on drawing and painting, has experience as a practicing artist, and has experience in art exhibition and / or gallery curation or gallery management.

Integral to the position is the ability of the selected candidate to share leadership roles with other full-time faculty in support of the department and its mission, and to collaborate with internal and external partners in furthering our commitment to community programming and engagement.

1. Teach Art courses at all levels of learning and in multiple modalities including fully in-person, online and hybrid.

2. Teach courses within dual enrollment and special populations programs.

3. Coordinate with department faculty and division administrative assistant for purchase requests and budgeting for art department.

4. Expand the adoption of open educational resources as part of the Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) initiative for Art Courses.

5. Participate in the implementation of California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and / or legislative initiatives as they relate to the Art department.

6. Carry out duties related to art gallery coordination including, but not limited to : outreach and recruitment of artists; exhibit planning and installation; coordinating, planning and executing yearly student art show; hiring, training and overseeing student workers; collaborating with external and internal stakeholders and conducting community outreach.

7. Teach courses in assigned discipline by communicating subject matter clearly and effectively.

8. Adapt methodologies for students with special needs and different learning styles.

9. Demonstrate commitment to professional development, including but not limited to activities such as : participation in professional conferences, workshops, seminars, membership in professional organizations, research projects, publishing academic work, participation in statewide committees or organizations, etc.

10. Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.

11. Participate in faculty responsibilities such as : course and curriculum development and review, student learning outcomes and assessment, program review, committees, research and special projects as needed in the discipline / department or district.

12. Attend and participate in department, division and college meetings and keep posted office hours.

13. Meet record keeping obligations on time, e.g. grades, census, reports, rosters, textbook orders, and requisitions.

14. Maintain and provide current course syllabi as required by California Education Code and Board policy.

15. Foster a professional work and learning environment.

16. Perform other duties as required by the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Required Qualifications :

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

1. Master’s in Fine Arts, Art, or Art History

Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in Humanities

NOTE : “Master’s in fine arts” as used here refers to any master’s degree in the subject matter of fine arts, which is defined to include visual studio arts such as drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, and metal and jewelry art; and also art education and art therapy. It does not refer to the “Master of Fine Arts” (MFA) degree when that degree is based on specialization in performing arts or dance, film, video, photography, creative writing or other nonplastic arts.)

1 . Knowledge of and experience in teaching Art History courses at the community college.

2. Willingness to teach in a variety of environments including high school dual enrollment sites.

3. Knowledge of and experience with OER / ZTC / Online education.

4. Experience in gallery exhibition, curation or management.

5. Possessing a contemporary art practice.

6. Demonstrate a strong foundational knowledge in 2D Design fundamentals with emphasis on Drawing

7. Proven track record of collaboration across stakeholder groups

8. Grant writing experience

9. Bilingual abilities, desirable.

Salary Range :

92,844 to $127,448 Entry Level Annual Salary (10 Month Academic Salary Schedule 2024-2025); Maximum Salary Potential $165,361. Note : Actual Salary placement is based on candidate's verified education and experience.
