POSITION TITLE : FACULTY, EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES (EMS) / FIRE SCIENCE

STATUS : Full time Tenure Track

DEPARTMENT : Health and Public Services

DIVISION : Academic Affairs

UNION : Faculty-AFT Local 604

CLASSIFICATION : Exempt

REPORTS TO : Department Chair, Health and Public Services

PLACEMENT : Placement on salary schedule is dependent on qualifications.

HIRING RANGE : Qualifications include education and related work experience.

POSITION SUMMARY

Fifteen credit hours a semester constitute a normal load. Position is subject to all terms and provisions of the Joliet Junior College faculty contract. Course assignments may be early morning, late afternoon, evening, Saturday, summer, and at branch campuses or satellite centers including some classes that may include outdoor activities.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Key responsibility : teach in-person EMR and EMT courses scheduled for morning, afternoon and / or evening hours with a focus on patient care, student wellbeing, and efficient classroom management.

2. Assist EMS program coordinator with lab and clinical site management for EMT courses.

3. Fill in as instructor for entry-level fire science courses as needed.

4. Assist EMS / Fire program coordinators with curriculum revisions to remain compliant with DOT training standards, IDPH licensing rules, NREMT testing standards, and OSFM requirements.

5. Provide input and assistance for development of new courses and degrees.

6. Help assess and update curriculum materials including textbooks, PowerPoints, quizzes and exams.

7. Help compile statistics regarding retention and completion, as well as stakeholder satisfaction.

8. Participate in departmental meetings and college events; serve on college and local committees.

9. Provide input and assistance for budget requests, annual program reviews and other reports as requested.

10. Act as dual credit liaison for EMS / fire students at local high school career centers and organize opportunities for those students to acquaint themselves with JJC prior to graduation.

11. Help coordinate and instruct the college’s public safety dual enrollment program in which high school students attend fire, EMS and law enforcement coursework on main campus.

12. Participate in recruitment events both on and off campus.

13. Participate on advisory boards, committees and / or organizations related to the EMS / Fire program.

14. Assist EMS / Fire program coordinators in compiling public safety job statistics and employment trends monthly.

15. Collaborate with other Nursing, Health and Public Service programs in the best interest of the college.

16. Act as faculty advisor for entry-level students in EMS / Fire program.

17. Perform other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor’s degree in related field; will consider equivalent combination of education and experience.

2. Current IDPH paramedic or PHRN license in good standing.

3. Current Illinois OSFM BOF or FFII certification.

4. Minimum seven (7) years’ experience as a firefighter / paramedic (14,000 hours).

5. Experience with classroom instruction in college, fire / EMS agency or hospital setting.

6. IDPH / NAEMSE Lead Instructor I license required within six months of hire.

7. AHA BLS CPR instructor certification required within six months of hire.

8. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.

9. Familiarity with Microsoft Office apps (Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams, Word, Excel, OneDrive), Adobe Acrobat, YouTube, social media providers, AI resources, virtual reality and major search engines.

10. Deeply rooted personal commitment to students whose backgrounds are underrepresented in public safety and healthcare fields.

11. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.

12. Demonstrated commitment to the college’s core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master Degree in related field.

2. Knowledge of DOT EMS education curriculum and IDPH regulations regarding education programs, including site code applications.

3. Familiarity with EMS / Fire agencies in the JJC district.

4. Illinois OSFM Fire Instructor I certification.

5. Current unrestricted Class B non-CDL license and knowledge of basic fire apparatus operations.

6. Community college teaching experience.

7. Experience with college course development, assessment, curriculum planning and accreditation requirements.

8. Experience with college instructional and curricular technology.

9. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.

10. Demonstrated multicultural competence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Standard classroom equipment and software.

2. Standard pre-hospital and hospital equipment and PPE.

3. Standard structural firefighting apparatus, equipment and PPE.

4. Must be able to lift minimum 35 lbs. unassisted.

5. Must comfortably act as patient / crew for hands-on EMS assessment and basic fire suppression activities.
