The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) at Stanford University, as part of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research (VPDoR), supports and advances the teaching, learning and research activities at Stanford by promoting a safe and healthy campus environment. The Stanford University Fire Marshalâs Office (SUFMO) is part of Stanford Universityâs Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and provides comprehensive services to the Stanford community encompassing all aspects of Fire Safety. All SUFMO staff are dedicated to supporting the academic, research, clinical and public service missions of the University. By providing engineering, education, maintenance, and inspection services, we allow the Stanford community to pursue their goals in a safe environment.
The SUFMO group is seeking a Fire Sprinkler Technician to perform journeyman-level work involved in the installation, testing, inspection maintenance, and repair of the fire sprinkler monitoring equipment for the Stanford campus and certain related facilities. After receiving instructions and work specifications from a supervisor, your assignments will be inspected in progress and upon completion for compliance with specifications. In this position you will :
- Perform code (NFPA 25) required inspection, testing, and maintenance. Install, repair, replace and fire sprinkler control valves, check valves and other various appurtenances. Coordinate testing schedule with building managers.
- Install new fire sprinkler heads and associated sprinkler piping. Relocate and replace existing sprinkler heads and associated sprinkler piping. Cut, ream, thread and groove all sizes of sprinkler pipe as needed for projects and repairs.
- Repair sprinkler systems that have been damaged or installed incorrectly. Modify sprinkler systems to maintain proper coverage for tenant improvements.
- Perform minor fire pump repair and tests. Perform minor repairs on monitoring devices (tamper switch / flow switch). Take fire panels off-line, isolate and drain sprinkler systems to allow outside contractors to perform necessary work. Assist in back-flow prevention testing program with Stanfordâs Utilities Department (Water program).
- Inspect and assist with fire sprinkler portion of final walk-throughs for new construction sites and projects; perform system acceptance tests with Santa Clara County Fire Marshalâs Office staff as needed.
- Complete all required documentation (test sheets, work orders, etc.).
- Maintain computer-based inspections in accordance with applicable regulations.
- Comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies regarding health and safety and must observe and support good health and safety practices. Provide EH&S support as assigned during emergencies.
- Respond to campus or SLAC emergencies.
- Use personal protection equipment (PPE) that is appropriate to the work being performed.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS :
Education & Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent. Three yearsâ experience installation, inspection and testing of water based fire sprinkler systems or a combination of education and relevant experience.

80dB TWA, heavy metals, temperature extremes, dust, all types of chemicals used in labs, fiberglass insulation.
WORK STANDARDS :
The expected pay range (A31) for this position is $43.36 (Step 1) to $52.67 (step 10) per hour.
