Position Summary :

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Librarian at Kenan-Flagler Business School (KFBS) supports the School’s educational and research mission through data / resource acquisition and customer service. The Librarian is fully responsible for the acquisition and management of all of KFBS data and electronic resources. This person ensures that the KFBS community has easy access to a broad range of data and research publications appropriate for business instruction and research in a top tier business school. The Librarian assists faculty, staff, undergraduate, MBA, and doctoral students with research in contemporary business issues.

  • Manages electronic resource acquisition, licensing, and payment. Negotiates agreements with vendors, and completes necessary IT paperwork to ensure compliance with university policies.
  • Maintains acquisition information in appropriate systems, responds to public and staff inquiries, and interacts as needed with vendors and KFBS patrons.
  • Conducts return on investment analysis of data resources, evaluates usage, and surveys faculty to ensure availability of essential resources and eliminate duplication.
  • Enables students and faculty to connect to resources in an efficient manner, which includes making resources available on a user-friendly website, individual and group instruction, and troubleshooting access issues.

Reference

  • Provides research support services about scholarly and data sources for faculty members and undergraduates, MBA, and PhD students.
  • Offers programming in person and online for faculty and students as needed. Knows business library best practices and resources with respect to providing research service and data to the School community.
  • Speaks to graduate and undergraduate classes about data sources and create user-friendly guides for specific courses (MBA and Honors classes, STAR, etc.)
  • Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

    Requires the Masters in Library Science (MLS) degree (or foreign degree equivalent). In specialized libraries, may substitute an advanced degree in the field of specialization (e.g., legal degree for a law library, or a history degree for a special historical collection within the library setting).

    Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

  • Familiarity managing electronic resources throughout the life-cycle, from acquisitions to renewal.
  • Proven experience doing or supporting business or economics research, financial services industry research, and / or using tools that support business and economics research.
  • Familiarity with identifying and retrieving data to address library patrons’ research questions.
  • Strong teaching and presentation skills, with knowledge of information literacy best practices and standards for business and economics instruction.
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse user communities, including students, faculty, researchers, colleagues, and community members.
  • Flexibility to balance a variety of long- and short-range projects and respond to changing demands and timetables.
  • Ability to work independently, effectively, and confidentially, using tact and excellent judgment.
  • Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

  • Experience working as a business librarian in an academic, public, or corporate setting.
  • Academic degree with a concentration in business or economics.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • Demonstrated expertise with business literature and resources, such as :

  • Moody’s (Orbis, Osiris)
  • LSEG Workspace (including Eikon and SDC Platinum)
  • Experience with or knowledge of how to create and maintain online tools to support teaching, learning, and research (ex. LibGuides, video creation software, etc.).
  • Proficiency with Microsoft and Adobe products.
  • Familiarity with a Library Management System such as Innovative Interfaces and / or an electronic resource management system.
  • Experience with current and emerging trends in academic business librarianship, such as AI, data librarianship, and assessment.
