Job Description :

Established in 1982, the Pembroke Center Archives identifies, collects, and processes important collections related to our mission : advancing the capacity for research and teaching on women, gender, and feminist scholarship in the Brown University library system. Local, national, and international scholars visit the library to use Pembroke Center collections for research.

The Archives have three primary areas of focus : the Feminist Theory Archive, women and gender at Brown University, and feminist activism in Rhode Island.

The Processing Archivist will accession, arrange, and describe archival analog and digital collections. The incumbent will also coordinate with professors and community members to schedule and prepare materials for instructional sessions led by the Nancy L. Buc ‘65 LLD'94 hon Pembroke Center Archivist or the Assistant Archivist.

This is a fixed-term position, renewable annually to June 30, 2028, dependent on funding.

Education and Experience

  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library science and at least 1 year of related experience in an archival setting are required
  • Undergraduate degree in the humanities required; gender and sexuality studies, Africana studies, migration studies, or related fields preferred
  • Proficiency in a second language preferred
  • Experience providing access to archival resources through cataloging, reference, research or teaching is required
  • Experience processing archival collections is required.
  • Experience processing digital records is preferred.
  • Experience with archival content management systems and technologies applicable for the archival environment is required. Experience using ArchivesSpace, Alma / Primo, and Aeon is preferred.
  • Experience working with archival content metadata standards and current practice in archival arrangement and acquisition for paper and digital records, including knowledge of DACS (Describing Archives : a Content Standard) and EAD (Encoded Archival Description), and MODS (Metadata Object Description Schema) is required.
  • Excellent archival processing skills with the ability to process 80 linear feet of archival material per year.
  • Excellent research / writing skills with the ability to show examples of previously produced finding aids including abstracts, biographical notes, and scope & content notes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to collaborate and work effectively within and across organizational boundaries, with diverse donors and a wide variety of users.
  • Demonstrated capacity for critical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to be flexible, tolerate ambiguity, adapt to change and successfully work in an academic and residential environments
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills with proven success in meeting deadlines.
  • A user-focused approach to archival work and ability to think creatively about how best to promote collections within the Brown community and to external scholars and the public.
  • Ability to problem solve and make decisions independently towards the safety and management of an archival repository
  • Familiarity with Google suite.
  • Advanced technology skills including the ability to interact with digital repositories.
  • Possess a willingness and ability to support and promote a diverse and inclusive campus community.
