Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :
The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention (HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children’s health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 23 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.
Position Summary :
THIS POSTING IS FOR TWO IDENTICAL POSITIONS (POSITION NUMBERS 20047224 AND 20064669). BY APPLYING, YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR BOTH AVAILABLE POSITIONS.
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The UNC Community Health and Wellness Resource (CHWR) team is offering a research internship for undergraduate students interested in public health. The CHWR team conducts innovative research designed to support caregivers and those in their care through equitable, innovative strategies that promote health and wellness. The purpose of the internship is to provide hands-on research experience for an undergraduate student who may be interested in a career in public health.
Research Interns with the CHWRG can expect the following :
- High-quality, short-term work experience
- 8 to12 week Summer internship appointment
- 20-30 hour work week
- Professional development opportunities including participation in professional development workshops
- One-on-one mentoring from senior staff at various stages of the research process
- Potential to network with researchers outside the CHWRG and area of expertise
- Seminars from researchers and / or public health organizations
- Experience conducting public health research and engagement with researchers working across multiple projects

Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :
This internship is designed for full-time undergraduate students. Undergraduate students who will graduate prior to the summer of employment are not eligible.

Students meeting the National Institutes of Health’s definition of Socio-Economic Disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
