The Department of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks applicants for a teaching faculty position effective July 1, 2025. This position will be at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor or Teaching Associate Professor, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will join a cohesive and innovative group of colleagues, in a department dedicated to excellence in teaching.

Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit :

The Department of Biology at UNC-Chapel Hill is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of new and existing knowledge in the broad discipline of Biology by maintaining a high-quality faculty who integrate cutting-edge research and student-focused teaching.

We are one of the largest academic departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. We have over 3,000 majors and intendent majors, and we enroll over 5,000 undergraduate students in our classes each year. Our average total annual expenditures exceed $24 million, with nearly half of that coming from grant sponsored research. Our large research base spans many areas of biology and supports several outstanding graduate programs. We consist of 54 tenure-track faculty, 16 teaching faculty, 10 research faculty, and numerous active adjunct and emeritus faculty who are engaged in basic and interdisciplinary research and teaching, both within the department and between other departments and schools at UNC.

We currently have 52 graduate students, 30 post-docs and employ approximately 85 additional graduate and undergraduate students from across the university to assist in our teaching and research missions. Further, we are supported by an administrative staff of 19, with an additional 45 staff directly supporting research.

Position Summary :

The position calls for teaching three classes per semester, which may include fundamental classes for biology majors such as cell biology and genetics, and biodiversity (ecology, evolution, and organismal biology), general biology for non-majors, and advanced biology classes in areas of the candidate’s expertise. The new faculty member will also be expected to engage in departmental service and will have opportunities for summer teaching. The position will be for an initial fixed term period of one to three years with potential for renewal.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements :

ABD candidates who expect to have completed their degree by the appointment start date or PhD in Biology or related field. All candidates must have a record of college teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience :

The strongest candidates will have relevant experience teaching classes in-person, in addition to remote and online instruction. Applicants with a record of independent college teaching, ideally with in-person experience, along with a commitment to using evidence-based teaching methods in the classroom are preferred, as are applicants with strong interdisciplinary content knowledge. Applicants with a pedagogical understanding in the field of biology at the college level.

If invited to a preliminary screening interview, candidates will be asked to :

1. Submit a teaching demonstration video. This is a short video of themselves teaching an introductory biology topic of their choosing. The video should be between 5 and 10 minutes in length.2. Assure the submission of at least 2 letters of reference (at least one of which must address the candidate’s potential as an educator) by midnight on April 15, 2025.

Review of applications will begin March 18, 2025 and continue until the position is filled.
