LDAR Lead Technician

Position Summary:

A Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) Lead Technician assists in meeting compliance standards by inspecting and monitoring at oil refineries, natural gas plants, and/or upstream facilities utilizing air monitoring equipment and data collection devices. The Lead Technician will assist the Site Supervisor and step-up to Site Supervisor role in the absence of Site Supervisor.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine environmental compliance inspections utilizing air monitoring equipment and data collection devices.
  • Detect fugitive emissions from facility equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs on leaking refinery and/or pipeline equipment.
  • Generate maintenance work orders and follow up on repairs.
  • Correctly monitor all leak interfaces, including appropriate response time, deflection point, and placement (pass internal audit).
  • Calibrate and precision calibrate instrumentation (pass internal audit).
  • Perform drift assessment (pass internal audit).
  • Complete Safety Tools PPE and Monitoring (STPM) checklist daily.
  • Correctly fill out leaker tags, update, and remove as needed.
  • Correctly hang permanent and temporary tags. Know valve anatomy and proper placement.
  • Consistently meet client Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
  • Know and practice the 5/15 Day Repair Rule to ensure site maintenance staff meets regulatory deadlines.
  • Utilize provided valve book to identify components, as needed.
  • Enter daily time and expenses into ERP software. Submit on a weekly basis no later than Monday the following week.
  • Add and delete components from field maps in LDAR database(s) and mark missing tags.
  • Mark missing tags in database(s).
  • Be able to identify each component type present on P&IDs.
  • Be able to follow lines to identify valves on P&IDs.
  • Be able to find each component and valve in the field and mark it on the P&ID correctly.
  • Obtain and keep current a Level 1 troubleshooting certification or equivalent per piece of equipment.

  • Perform daily analyzer diagnostics.
  • Analyzer Hydrogen fill competency.
  • Perform basic maintenance on and properly store equipment.
  • Identify which environmental regulation the primary facility falls under.
  • Consistently meet leak deadlines.
  • Consistently meet new component deadlines.
  • Complete and pass all assigned trainings on time.
  • Moderate monitoring and component type knowledge based on field experience.
  • Have excellent understanding of the regulation and corresponding testing equipment with 6-7 of the following methods: Subpart W monitoring, Method 9 monitoring, Method 21 monitoring, CEMS assistance, El Paso testing, BWON sampling, Groundwater sampling, Fenceline monitoring, and Tank inspections.
  • Have excellent knowledge of the facility's main processes at which you are stationed and be proficient in LDAR applicability.
  • Management of Change (MOC) tracking, including spreadsheet knowledge and PID redline drawings.
  • True-ups: Be capable of following PIDs in field and determine accuracy.
  • Search client databases for LDAR component information.
  • Run leak reports and other applicable reports in LDAR database(s).
  • Assign daily routes already created for self. Be able to assign routes to other techs if needed to maintain efficiency.
  • Be comfortable with and use additional monitoring equipment such as OGI camera, VPAC, Hi-Flow, and El Paso Board.
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Education/Experience:


High School diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred. No previous experience is required.


Language Ability:


Good interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Ability to communicate effectively with teammates, managers, directors, and clients. Must be able to communicate effectively via electronic and digital mediums including email, telephone, text message, and Microsoft Teams. Must be fluent in English.


Math Ability:


Must be able to perform basic arithmetic and algebra. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.


Reasoning Ability:


Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.


Computer Skills:


Basic computer skills including being able to use email, internet, software, databases, and other programs.


Certificates/Licenses:

  • Valid driver's license
  • TWIC Card
  • Ability to travel to other company offices, job sites within the United States and across state lines.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud. Ear protection is provided. Facilities are located outdoors in the elements. Weather and temperatures can sometimes be unfavorable. Winter gear is provided. Facilities contain flammable substances. Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can potentially create a hazardous and explosive atmosphere. Flame Resistant clothing is required.

While performing the duties of the job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, crouch, bend, twist, and reach. Employee is required to stand and/or walk for most of the workday. Must be able to climb up to heights of 200 feet and perform work. Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Must have full function of both hands. Must be able to drive and/or ride in a vehicle for extended periods of time.


Position Details:

  • Travel is required - Approximately 25% Baytown, Texas to Victoria, Texas
  • Overtime is required based on the needs of Insight Environmental
  • Billability - Approximately 100%
