MUST HAVES :

  • 3 years of recent experience as a financial counselor within healthcare
  • Experience setting up payment plans and helping patients with financial assistance applications
  • HS Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Proven customer service skills
  • Proficient with EHR software and Financial Assistance software

PLUSES :

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Experience with Cerner and / or FlyWire
  • Day To Day :

    An employer is looking for a Financial Counselor. This individual will be responsible for assisting patients with resolving medical liabilities, applying for financial assistance, working the application queue of about 25-30 / day, and making adjustments to accounts accordingly. This role requires high-level customer service and involves both in-person and phone communication with patients. An important responsibility to maintain a high level of customer service is proactively managing the patient accounts, sharing options, discussing payment plans, and talking them through the steps of the application process for financial assistance.

    Key Responsibilities :

  • Patient Assistance :  Help patients resolve medical liabilities and apply for financial assistance.
  • Funding Identification :  Identify funding sources and assist patients in navigating options.
  • Appointment Coordination :  Screen, schedule, and coordinate account assignments to Health Advocates for benefits determination.
  • Application Processing :  Review and process charity care / assistance program applications; verify patient information and documentation.
  • Eligibility Communication :  Communicate eligibility requirements to patients and families; follow up to obtain missing documentation.
  • Application Management :  Ensure accurate and timely processing of applications; follow up on application status and resolve issues.
  • Collections :  Initiate collections on payment plans or discounted services.
  • Record-Keeping :  Log and maintain monthly charity care statistics; reconcile data and submit to the business office manager.
  • Document Management :  Organize and maintain charity care applications for staff and external auditors.
  • Presumptive Screening :  Perform eligibility screening for accounts with potential bad debt placement.
  • Effective Communication :  Communicate effectively with diverse groups, including patients and families; build positive relationships within the service community.
  • Billing Review :  Review self-pay encounters in the hospital system and release bills to patients.
  • Adjustments Application :  Apply adjustments for uninsured and underinsured patients using the hospital’s discount policy.
  • Insurance Updates :  Stay informed of updated insurance requirements and reimbursement practices.
