Position Purpose
Position is responsible for maintaining center buildings and grounds in top condition by developing work plans to accomplish maintenance and repair activities, assuring the availability of necessary tools, equipment and materials and minimal disruption to daily operation. Perform assembly and minor repair of equipment/furniture, painting, plumbing, lighting, and yard and window maintenance. Develops routine preventative maintenance schedules and maintains inventory.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Inspire Development Centers provides Early Childhood Education (ECE) and social services to more than 4000 children, in center based and home based setting, at more than 27 Child Development Centers (CDC) throughout the State of Washington. Inspire provides services under various federal and state funded programs with differing regulations and stipulations, which must be coordinated and adhered to, including, but not limited to: Regional Head Start (RHS), Migrant Seasonal Head Start (MSHS), Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program (ECEAP) and Early Head Start (EHS). The agency is required to meet an annual quota of non-federal share (in-kind) funds. A large majority of children’s first language is Spanish.
Supervisory and Other Relationships
The Custodian / Maintenance reports to the Center Manager, and works closely with Center Staff and with and around children.

- Responsible to sweep, vacuum, mop, dust, clean, and disinfect classrooms sinks, restrooms, and common areas. Responsible to dispose of all garbage and disinfect wastebaskets or garbage cans daily. Keep outside equipment clean and in good/safe working conditions, (i.e. lawn mowers, shop vacuums, extractor, etc.). Strip, wax, and polish floors and shampoo carpets according to center schedule.
- Responsible to keep sidewalks, parking lot, and playground areas safe from hazard. Responsible that all doors and windows are securely locked before closing center. Discuss unique concerns of facility and immediately report any unsafe equipment to Safety Committee Chair person and Center Manager.
- Responsible to replace outside light bulbs, exit lights, broken gutters, washing windows, minor exterior center repairs, plumbing, and painting. Check and change furnace filters as needed. Lawn maintenance as needed during growing season. To include cutting lawn, watering, weed control, and center landscaping.
- Constructs, erects, and installs structures and fixtures of wood, plywood, and wallboard using carpenter’s hand and power tools, to include but not be limited to children’s outdoor play equipment and appropriate fall zones for each structure.
- Be familiar with Hazardous Materials Program and ensure that all chemicals, and cleaning supplies and materials are stored and locked in a childproof cabinet or storeroom.
- Responsible to prepare and maintaining inventories of janitorial supplies, reporting and requesting to the Center Manager, those that need to be purchased.
- Assist the head cook and/or cook in storing and dating groceries.
- Shows interest in furthering professional growth by attending staff meetings, workshops, trainings, and seminars.
- Maintains confidentiality of program and client related information at all times.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
Incumbents are required to demonstrate knowledge and abilities in these areas:
- General Educational Development (GED) certificate, or obtain within the first year of employment;
- Extensive knowledge in building maintenance and custodial practices;
- Experience in planning and preparation of workloads;
- Experience in policy and procedures;
- Experience in building and maintenance risk management;
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills;
- Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instructions and procedures without constant supervision;
- Understanding of the interrelationships between services and systems;
- Must be able to work independently and efficiently;
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English to fulfill the responsibilities of this position;
- Ability to maintain a high standard of safety, cleanliness, and efficiency in all maintenance and repair projects;
- Ability to move equipment and materials within and between units.
- Ability to learn new tasks quickly and efficiently;
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines;

- Knowledge of a personal computer, including Microsoft Office; and

Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
- English/Spanish bi-lingual fluency.
- 3 years experience in custodial and maintenance.
- High Standards of work ethics – cleanliness and sanitation.
Incumbents Are Required To Have The Following
- Must be at least 18 years of age;
- Valid Washington State driver’s license;
- Must provide a yearly driving abstract;
- Must maintain acceptable driving history;
- Proof of automobile insurance;
- Ability to travel to perform job duties and responsibilities;
- Must pass initial and periodic criminal and background check;
- Must pass initial and periodic Department of Early Learning (DEL) background check;
- Must pass initial and periodic employee health clearance; (present it within forty-five (45) days of employment);
- Current Food Handler card; (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
- Current First Aid / CPR cards, (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
- Subject to initial and periodic TB screen;
- Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV / AIDS) training, (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
- Blood Borne Pathogen training, (obtain the training within thirty (30) days of employment);
- Subject to random drug screen;
- Must sign a Confidentiality Agreement; and
- Must complete and sign a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Statement on an annual basis.
