Communications Internship Overview
Join one of up to 13 internship opportunities across nine fields. The IALR Summer Internship Program offers real-world leadership development and on-the-job training designed to prepare you for a dynamic career.
The Communications intern will assist with promotional activities and endeavors to underscore the milestones and achievements supporting IALR’s mission of economic transformation. Communications of technical and scientific information will be expected.
Responsibilities may include:
- Reporting on activities and events at IALR involving STEM camps, intern and research projects, and other areas that cross scientific, technical and STEM fields
- Assisting with photography and videography of summer STEM-related events
- Supporting graphic design projects
- Helping produce social media editorial content
- Supporting facility tours – specializing in a knowledge of STEM-related activities and labs
- Assisting with technical writing
- Providing research on technical journals and publications for IALR
- Completing other projects as assigned
Internship Details
This posting is one of several internship opportunities available at the Institute for Advanced Learning & Research during Summer 2025. The goal of the IALR Summer Internship Program is to provide meaningful on-the-job training and real-world leadership development experiences in the diverse career fields found at IALR. IALR is offering up to thirteen internship opportunities across nine areas.
Work Location
This internship is an on-site position in Danville, VA. We are unable to accommodate remote work for interns. Please note that this internship is primarily in-person and does not include housing or a housing allowance.
Who Can Apply
- High school graduates (including Spring 2025 graduates with plans for college in Fall 2025)
- Current undergraduate or graduate students
- Recent college graduates (within the last 12 months)

- Any concerns that might affect your internship performance
Timeline
- Interviews: April 17 & 18, 2025 (via Microsoft Teams)
- Selection Notification: April 25, 2025
- Orientation: June 2, 2025, or June 9, 2025
- Internship Luncheon & Presentations: July 31, 2025
Internship Details
- Commitment: Interns are expected to work 224 hours over an 8-week term (28 hours per week).
- One unpaid week off is permitted, extending the overall timeframe to 9 weeks; otherwise, the internship must be completed in consecutive weeks.
- Compensation: Interns will receive four stipends of $840 based on IALR’s payroll schedule. The amount of each stipend may vary based on the number of hours worked in a pay period. The total compensation for the entire internship is $3,360.
- Schedule: Your mentor and you will finalize a detailed work schedule during orientation.
