Certified Peer Specialist

The Institute for Human Services (IHS) is Hawaii's most comprehensive human services agency dedicated to ending and preventing homelessness. For over 45 years, we've been at the forefront of creating tailored solutions for those in crisis, offering a continuum of care that includes emergency shelters, housing programs, health services, employment assistance, and outreach.

Hawaii Certified Peer Specialist (HCPS) is an active member of the HICM Program and provides in-person peer support services to clients who may be homeless and/or with serious mental illnesses and substance abuse/use issues. This position will function as a role model to peers, exhibiting competency in personal recovery and use of coping skills. The HCPS serves as a consumer advocate, providing consumer information and peer support for clients in housing and on the streets.

Compensation:

$17.00 hourly

Essential Functions:

1. Demonstrate excellent customer service consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.
2. Role model the value of every individual’s recovery experience and assist clients in articulating personal goals for recovery.
3. Ensure clients are working with their case manager or treatment team in determining the steps needed to take in order to achieve these goals and self-directed recovery.
4. Assist clients into linking with community resources and with applications for DHS benefits, ensuring paperwork is completed and accurate.
5. Teach coping, problem-solving skills and life skills and ensure clients attend doctor’s appointments by transporting clients to appointment locations.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

1. Knowledge of the recovery process, treatment plan and mental health recovery process.
2. Knowledge of problem solving strategies to support self-directed recovery that include working knowledge of mental illness signs/symptoms (i.e. auditory/visual hallucinations, aggressive talk and behaviors, thoughts of self harm towards others, isolation).
3. Able to navigate community resources.
4. Possess personal qualities of integrity, patience and commitment to mission.
5. Flexible and able to multitask; can work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment.

Required Education & Experience:

1. High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
2. At least 1 year of sobriety and stability in the community.
3. Certified as a Hawaii Peer Specialist or currently in the process of.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

Regular Part-Time classification. General business hours M-F, flexible schedule that meets department's needs. Hours and days may vary based on the needs of the organization.
