Position Description

The assistant controller is responsible for performing a variety of accounting-related tasks and supporting the controller, chief financial officer, and the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) in ensuring accurate financial statements. This position is also responsible for managing journal entries, assisting with reimbursements, and coordinating with the budget and forecasting team, as well as remaining compliant with federal regulations, agency guidelines, and IIR internal controls and policies.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a firm understanding of IIR's travel and expense process to include direct participation in the reimbursement process
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts monthly and review the trial balance against financial statements quarterly, offering adjustments as necessary
  • Coordinate with the controller to ensure
  • Timely completion of monthly financial statements for distribution to ELT and managers
  • Monthly preparation and posting of adjusting journal entries
  • Enter/update budget data into the accounting information system and assist the administrative team as necessary in analyzing variances against the budget
  • Calculate, prepare, and document periodic draws from funders (e.g., the Department of Treasury's payment system)
  • Review current processes and tools to provide insights to managers, including coordination with the business intelligence team
  • Generate data to track, report, and prepare journal entries for quarterly retirement payments, and reconcile same
  • Participate in the annual single-audit, indirect-cost rate proposal development, and other periodic requirements (e.g., monthly, quarterly, annually)
  • Comply with federal, agency, and IIR policies, procedures, and regulations for processing and recording accounting information
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures, including an understanding of new standards and changes (e.g., GAAP, the federal regulations, DOJ Financial Guidelines)
  • Communicate with IIR employees, leadership, and external parties to ensure accuracy, compliance, and the safeguarding of company assets
  • Other duties as assigned

Knowledge and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance (master's degree a plus)
  • Five or more years' experience (may be in a related role)
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and current technology (e.g., experience with accounting software and related financial/business tools)
  • Strong facilitation and interpersonal skills
  • Strong personal and professional values
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks with attention to detail and with a high level of accuracy

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Most work is performed in a highly productive and fast-paced hybrid office environment with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. While working remotely, employees must be able to maintain a quiet, noise-free office space that is free of distractions. However, there may be occasional tasks that include lifting and moving one's workspace equipment (e.g., monitors, printer) or file boxes for any printed materials; the maximum weight would be 20 pounds or less.
