Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy (IJLA) is a small Options school that feels like home for the 150 Latinx youth we serve from Pilsen and the surrounding community. IJLA is a second chance high school designed to serve students between the ages of 16-21 who are seeking a more personalized and individualized program. We provide students with an interdisciplinary, project-based academic program while simultaneously providing strong social emotional supports. Our educational philosophy is rooted in social justice and focuses on rebuilding students’ perspective of learning in order to navigate life in a meaningful and purposeful way. We invigorate hope and restore students’ hearts and minds to reclaim their education, graduate, and transform into agents of change.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
IJLA teachers instruct students in grades 9-12 in core content and lead an advisory group. Teachers are responsible for ensuring that every IJLA student masters the academic and social skills necessary to succeed in college and/or entry-level career pathway while also embodying IJLA’s core values daily. We use a Competency Based educational model to personalize learning and ensure ALL students are closing academic and social emotional gaps. IJLA teachers regularly seek feedback to continue developing their teaching practice to better serve IJLA students, build meaningful relationships with staff and students and have extremely high expectations for every adult and student in the building. We sweat the small stuff promoting excellence in all we do.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Backwards map curricula based on core competencies aligned with the CCSS, submit weekly lesson plans and unit plans accordingly
- Design and implement formal and informal assessments to track each individual student’s progress and learning needs, adjust lesson plans accordingly and update gradebook weekly using the IJLA competency based assessment system
- Use assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices
- Participate in collaborative curriculum development, grade level meetings and school wide functions to build staff culture and meet students’ needs
- Implement a clear, positive and consistent behavior management system that aligns to our school wide expectations and Restorative Discipline philosophy
- Hold necessary tutoring sessions to meet all students’ needs
- Participate in weekly professional development, grade level meetings and activities, and school wide functions
- Lead an exciting and motivating classroom experience for youth making classroom learning relevant to student lives
- Maintain attendance records for all classes taught
- Meet with parents regularly to discuss academic and social progress of students
- Inspire students to reach their highest potential
- Serve as monitor for specified areas of the school building as requested
- Other duties as requested
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field
- Type 09 certificate in Social Science; Bilingual and/or ESL preferred
- Deep understanding and experience with implementing IC3 Framework and CCSS
- Familiarity with Competency Based education and/or Personalized Learning
- Experience in a classroom setting, preferably experience working with at risk and low-income students
- Demonstrated commitment to educational equity for traditionally underserved students
- Maintain extremely high expectations of oneself, colleagues; able to communicate these expectations in a direct and motivating way
- Familiar with Restorative Justice practices
- Demonstrate a passion working with young people
- Team player and willing to take on multiple tasks at once and independent worker, requires minimal supervision
- Exceptional organization and time management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, bilingual English/Spanish preferred
- Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Internet

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Nature of work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment, inside and outside the classroom. Ability to stand for long periods of time. Requires ability to clearly communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Majority of work performed in a general high school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization and school sponsored events and meetings.
