POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Nursing Education Specialist will have the opportunity to enhance the quality of the nursing program and promote evidence-based practices within. Provides strategies and academic reinforcement to students throughout their academic program and as they prepare for success with the NCLEX-RN exam. Promotes a culture of lifelong learning.
The Nursing Education Specialist provides instruction, tutoring, remediation, and evaluation in didactic/intervention and clinical learning concepts, including all Skills Lab and Simulations, to a diverse student population.
The Nursing Education Specialist has the ability to cultivate a dynamic student-centered learning environment utilizing emerging, evidence-based teaching strategies and clinical practice. Support sessions may be offered during the day and evening. The Nursing Education Specialist reports to the Associate Dean of Nursing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supports the mission of Instituto College and the nursing program while adhering to policies, procedures, and standards of the institution, program, and regulating bodies
- Utilizes academic reinforcement and provides student success strategies when working with students individually and in small groups
- Assesses learning styles, identifies strengths, and determines opportunities for academic development; work to develop active learning and study strategies that are appropriate for their needs and optimizes their learning
- Utilizes effective coaching and mentoring skills to aid students in the development of critical thinking, professional development, and skill competency
- Assists students with preparing to take the NCLEX-RN Exam
- Utilizes a variety of supplemental instructional methods/materials and programming to assist students in mastering didactic and clinical learning concepts, as well as patient-care simulations
- Collaborates with didactic instructors to identify at-risk students; maintains communication to ensure continuity for students related to specific course expectations and discussions during tutoring/remediation session
- Works closely with the Associate Dean of Nursing to identify possible performance barriers, facilitate proper remediation strategies, and contribute to the nursing program’s continuous improvement overall
- Develops, implements, and updates effective personalized supplemental learning and/or remediation plans
- Maintains and enters attendance, assessment results, and all other related documents within the required time frame
- Ensures students follow attendance policies, dress code, and professional standards at all times
- Plans, prioritizes, and organizes assignments to meet established goals and deadlines
- Participates in curriculum development, outcomes assessment and revisions, preparation of course syllabi, textbook adoptions, selection of supplemental instructional materials (including library resources) and supplies
- Ongoing assessment of student’s performance/progress with timely feedback
- Collaborates with clinical education partners in instructional delivery and supervision of student learning in the clinical setting, including, but not limited to, orientation, adherence to agency policies/procedures, communication with members of the healthcare team, and student clinical evaluation
- Plans and schedules students for structured and open lab utilization times and ensures lab schedules are communicated to students
- Operates and maintains computerized simulation equipment
- Coordinates and supervises students to ensure that lab experiences meet course objectives and provides individual oversight to students for practice and/or remediation of technical skills as requested by faculty and students
- Collaborates and coordinates with department Administrative Assistant to ensure preparation of lab supplies; ensures timely inventory of all lab equipment
- Prepares and maintains lab and simulated patient care environments with equipment, supplies, media, computers, and materials required to replicate a simulated healthcare setting.
- Documents and communicates students’ academic progress to leadership
- Assists with orientation and boot camps
- Assists the Associate Dean of Nursing with collection and interpretation of data for reporting and program evaluation needs; assists with other special projects as needed
- Participates in Advisory Committee meetings when requested by the Associate Dean of Nursing
- Continuously engages in personal and professional development and scholarly activities
- Maintains appropriate personal attendance, accountability, and work productivity standards
- Participates in accreditation continuous readiness and planning activities
- Completes other duties as assigned
REQUIRED CREDENTIALS/QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s Degree in Nursing
- Current Professional Nurse (RN) licensure registered in Illinois
- Evidence of CEU’s as required for license renewal
- Current CPR; ACLS and/or PALS preferred
- Minimum 1 year of experience in an academic environment providing classroom instruction to nursing students or specialized tutoring support preferred
- Minimum 1 year of Simulation Lab Experience utilizing current evolving that include technologies
- Solid knowledge base of ATI, Exit Exams, NCLEX-RN test concepts, and nursing course content to successfully support the College’s educational practices, provide student academic support, as well as subject content reviews across the nursing program
- Minimum of 2 years competent practice in pediatric direct-care clinical nursing experience with at least 2 years in medical-surgical nursing (preferred) also expertise with college-level instructional technologies.

- Willingness to complete training to teach multi-option (e.g., synchronous, asynchronous) courses
- Ability to adhere to deadlines, react to unpredictable events quickly and efficiently, be resourceful, manage conflict and challenges

Majority of work performed in a classroom, lab, or healthcare facility environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
