The Bioinformatics Scientist is responsible for the design, implementation, analysis, validation, and application of bioinformatics methods and software tools in support of project, research group and Institute objectives. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of methodologies and concepts to analysis tasks, products, problems, and potential inventions. This part-time, temporary position in the Hadlock lab will focus on Placental Multiomics. 

 

Essential Duties:

●        Collaborates with biologists and software engineers to develop data models and analytical workflows to support the analysis of a variety of data types specific to designated projects

●        Employs a variety of scripting and other computer languages and tools to bridge disparate systems

●        Learns, understands, evaluates, and incorporates new cloud tools and technologies

●        Quickly converts ideas into prototypes for user interface designs

●        Examines and comprehends existing codebases while learning to work with various tools, data sources, and APIs

●        Utilizes workflow languages and batch processing tools to facilitate analytical workflows

●        Contributes to the creation of tailored bioinformatics programming solutions

●        Collaborates in the design, execution, and application of techniques, algorithms, and tools for analyzing and integrating bio molecular data

●        Participates in statistical analysis, machine learning, and software development to support project objectives

●        Collaborates with data providers to streamline data acquisition and annotation processes

●        Delivers results within agreed timelines

●        Selects and applies suitable methods to project aims

●        Participates in new project proposal meetings

●        Designs effective strategies for project success

●        Contributes to project documents, proposals, and publications

●        Reviews scientific literature to learn cutting-edge concepts and theories

●        Adopts and applies new technologies or methods that benefit the projects

●        Effectively shares work with team and working-group members

None

 

Required Education, Skills & Experience:

·         A Master’s degree in Molecular Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or relevant scientific discipline

·         One (1) or more year(s) directly related experience in research design, data modeling, and writing for scientific publication

·         Experience with, or ability to gain proficiency in lab software, equipment and tools required to complete work (e.g. SQL, Python)

·         A solid understanding of biology terms and principles as well as statistical analysis and scientific method

·         Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse population and range of personalities

·         A high degree of professional integrity

·         Adaptable to changing work requirements



All ISB staff members are expected to have baseline technical skills and the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately over email, the intranet/forum, etc.  Employees should be able to use Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint at a functional level.

Physical Demands:

Position is in a typical office environment with no adverse environmental conditions expected. Regularly requires sitting for extended periods. Regularly required to lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Frequently required to communicate with others using voice and hearing to exchange information.  Regularly requires repeating motions that may include hands, wrist, or fingers (e.g. using a computer keyboard and mouse). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
