BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under general supervision, the Community Outreach Specialist- Maternal & Child Health is afrontline public health worker who performs a wide variety of duties at the paraprofessional levelto engage, support, advocate, and educate community members in maternal and child health. The Community Outreach Specialist for Maternal and Child Health acts as a link between health andsocial services and the community. Their role is to enhance access to these services and improvehealth outcomes by increasing health knowledge and promoting self-sufficiency. This isaccomplished through various activities, including outreach, community education, informalcounseling, social support, and advocacy.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Conduct outreach to identify and engage mothers and caregivers in the community,providing resources and support for maternal and child health, including prenatal andpostnatal care, breastfeeding support, and child wellness.
2. Collaborate with local health services, community organizations, and governmentagencies to address maternal and child health disparities and improve access to services.
3. Provide maternal and child health education and support to individuals and groups,including prenatal and parenting classes, child development workshops, and nutritioneducation.
4. Advocate for the needs of mothers and children at the individual and community levels,addressing health disparities and promoting self-sufficiency and well-being.
5. Facilitate informational sessions and support groups for mothers and caregivers topromote shared learning and community engagement.
6. Distribute educational materials on maternal and child health at local events andcommunity centers to enhance awareness and accessibility of resources.
7. Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Administrative and/or functional supervision is received from the Program Manager-Maternal & Child Health.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
This position does not have any direct-report staff.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work environment and physical demand characteristics are representative of those anemployee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonableaccommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential jobfunctions. Work is performed indoors but requires frequent travel from one location to another toperform essential duties. Outside work may be required for certain community events. The position requires frequent use of computers, phones, copies and fax machines. The position requires frequent interaction with employees, outside agencies, and the public. Must occasionallylift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
EDUCATION
Bachelor’s degree in Public Health or a related field, coupled with a minimum of four (2)years of experience in community outreach and advocacy. Preference will be given tocandidates with experience specifically in maternal and child health.
**OR**
Master’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, or a related field, and at least one (1) yearof experience in community outreach and advocacy. Preference will be given to candidateswith experience in maternal and child health.
OTHER CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
As a condition of employment, the incumbent may be required to:
1. Work on weekends as necessary for community outreach events.
2. Travel outside of the Jackson, MS area for participation in community outreach eventsis required.
