Summary: Provides leadership in developing technical content and managing programs focused on loss reduction for light commercial properties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead Commercial Member Support: Oversee the provision of expert support to commercial members in the area of natural hazard risk reduction, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and member needs.

  • Product Development: Guide the creation and innovation of risk reduction products tailored to mitigate natural hazards impacting commercial properties. This includes risks such as wind, water intrusion, hail, wildfire, winter weather, flood, and other environmental factors.

  • Sustainability and Resiliency Focus: Identify and drive the development of new products at the intersection of sustainability and resilience, ensuring these solutions align with current and future risk management trends.

  • Program Implementation & Marketing: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to effectively implement and market the Commercial Risk Reduction Program, ensuring its success and relevance in the market.

  • Research Collaboration: Lead the partnership with the research team in designing, conducting, and analyzing tests related to the resilience of commercial structures. Oversee the creation of products based on findings from the Research Center.

  • Industry Representation: Act as the organization's representative in industry forums, fostering relationships with partners, commercial roofing manufacturers, trade groups, government agencies, and other relevant stakeholders. Focus on promoting the resilience of commercial buildings against natural hazards.

  • Training & Development: Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs on commercial property loss control for internal staff and member companies, enhancing industry knowledge and safety standards.

  • Content Creation: Oversee the drafting and development of business and commercial lines-focused papers, articles, and website content. Ensure content is informed by internal staff, members, external allies, and industry trends.

  • Technical Review: Provide engineering-oriented technical oversight for business and commercial lines-focused papers written by staff or consultants. Collaborate with the Business Protection and Communications teams to finalize content, ensuring accuracy and quality.

  • Member Inquiries: Manage and respond to member company inquiries related to business and commercial lines engineering issues, working closely with the Director of Member Relations to ensure prompt and effective support.

  • Building Code Advocacy: Identify opportunities for improvements to model building codes to enhance disaster resilience for light commercial buildings. Collaborate with the Director of Code Development to prepare code change proposals and defend against proposals that could weaken industry standards.


Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises one or more employees, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training staff; planning, assigning, and directing work; conducting performance appraisals; providing rewards and discipline as necessary; and addressing employee complaints and resolving issues.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Education and/or Experience: A minimum of five years of management experience, along with a bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least 10 years of experience in loss mitigation for commercial structures. Alternatively, a minimum of five years of management experience and a master’s degree in engineering with 10 years of relevant experience is also acceptable. Strong presentation and communication skills are required.

Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software and Project Management software. Working knowledge of all Microsoft products including Word, Excel and Access.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Professional Engineer Registration Preferred

Other Skills and Abilities: Extensive training in assessing the vulnerability of commercial buildings to natural and man-made hazards.

Travel: Travel demands are variable and can approach 25% to 40% of time during certain times of the year.
