About the Position


At the Insured Retirement Institute (IRI), we have a fantastic team committed to our mission of championing retirement security for all Americans. IRI is seeking a highly skilled Business Analyst with annuities experience in the financial services and/or insurance industry to play a crucial role in IRI’s operations and technology membership programs.


As a Business Analyst, you will be responsible for data modeling, visualization, and analysis to identify business opportunities to provide solutions and modernize business operations in the annuity and retirement income industry. The primary responsibilities include identifying, analyzing, assessing, and documenting various aspects of the insured retirement industry’s business processes and data to improve its efficiency, modernize the market, and drive growth. You will consult, collaborate, offer technical and systems guidance and act as a resource to business stakeholders, technology and solution partners to gain alignment, define standards, track measures of success and drive adoption.

Working directly with the Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, IRI’s members and solution partners, you will act as a both a technology and business expert, helping to make decisions impacting current and future technology business operations in the annuity and retirement income industry.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Requirement Gathering: Build trusted relationships and collaborate with stakeholders to identify, document, and prioritize business requirements, ensuring a clear understanding of objectives, constraints, and success criteria.
  • Business Process Analysis: Analyze existing business processes, workflows, and systems to identify areas for improvement, efficiency gains, and automation opportunities.
  • Data Analysis: Collect, evaluate, and interpret data to support decision-making processes. Develop reports, dashboards, and data visualizations as needed.
  • Documentation: Create detailed documentation, including business requirements documents, use cases, functional specifications, and process flows, to guide development and implementation.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Facilitate communication between member firm business units and technical teams to ensure a shared understanding of project scope and requirements.
  • Solution Design: Collaborate with technical teams to design and review industry solutions that align with business goals and requirements.
  • Project Management: Assist in industry project planning with estimates and implementation timelines, tracking, and reporting to ensure adoption. Proactively communicate project status, issues, and solutions to stakeholders. Escalate issues as needed to Chief Technology and Innovation Officer.
  • Continuous Improvement: Continuously monitor and assess business processes and systems, recommending improvements and innovations to drive business growth and efficiency.
  • Risk Management: Identify and address potential risks and issues that may impact success, working with stakeholders to develop mitigation strategies.
  • Communications: Utilize excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate recommended solutions, weighing risks, benefits, and potential value.
  • Presentations and Meetings: Assist in the preparation of presentations using Microsoft Office suite. Schedule, attend, or facilitate meetings as needed to support project activities.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of objectives and key results (OKR) and key performance indicators (KPI) for measuring success is highly preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and presentation skills, including the ability to interpret and articulate mandates.
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to foster and maintain relationships with various audiences to advance positions.
  • Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills and ability to work in a fast-paced atmosphere with changing priorities while maintaining high attention to detail.
  • Must have a strong work ethic and be effective in ambiguous situations.
  • Strong collaborative skills and ability to work in teams as well as independently.
  • Detail-oriented with strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills.
  • Ability to interpret technology regulations, policies, standards, and guidelines and to translate mandates into realistic and practical business operations.
  • Aptitude for learning new technology applications, databases, and other related software as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, etc.).
  • Understanding of polling software, e.g., Microsoft Forms, etc.
  • Must have regular access to a quiet, professional workspace for work during normal business hours as well as access o a reliable internet connection.
  • Some travel is required with limited advanced notice.


Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree preferred but not required in Business, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • Ten or more years of proven experience in a business analyst or similar role with an operational and technical background in the financial services and/or insurance industry (specifically, annuities) is required.
  • Possesses a solid understanding of insured retirement products/solutions and operations functions.
  • Extensive background in project management to deliver key business outcomes is required.
  • Knowledge of insurance processing administration systems and financial services.
