Job Summary: PES is a walk-in clinic that provides immediate interventions to persons experiencing a mental health crisis. Clients can meet with a counselor, discuss steps to keep themselves safe, meet with a prescriber for potential medication interventions, and obtain information about other programs that could be helpful for them. Individuals in psychiatric crisis are entitled to a timely evaluation and assessment when presenting to PES. PES provides interventions to residents of Travis County in acute psychiatric crisis or at risk of serious deterioration. PES may continue to provide crisis stabilization support with individuals on a transitional, temporary basis until the crisis is stabilized and/or successful linkage and referrals have been made. The goal is to provide needed treatment in the community with a goal of lowering the number of inpatient hospital days, incarcerations, and the accompanying monetary cost to the community.

In a broad sense, PES staff provides therapeutic crisis interventions including:

  • Assessment
  • De-escalation of crisis
  • Initiation, adjustment, restart and/or monitoring of medication regimens
  • Facilitation of voluntary hospitalizations
  • Crisis counseling
  • Referral and linkage to on-going community services

Interventions and services can be both office and community based and may require the use of a personal automobile. Individuals served may be diagnosed with mental illness, co-occurring substance use disorders, chronic health conditions, and/or IDD.

Staff members in this position are working under the supervision of a clinically licensed professional who provides ongoing evaluation and oversight of all assessments, diagnoses, and treatment.
