What are the responsibilities and job description for the My Friend’s Place – Residential Counselor - (Overnight Shifts) position at Integral Youth Services?

Pay: 17.50/hr.

Permanent: two shifts available.

Shift #1: Saturday, Sunday, Tuesday, two 12-hour shifts and one 8-hour shift - 32 hours.

Shift #2: Four eight-hour shifts - 32 hours

Additional Requirement: Regular position as stated above, but this position requires flexibility to work backup shifts as needed, on any night of the week, not to exceed 40 hours per week unless overtime is approved. Please do not apply if your schedule does not allow this flexibility.

You must be able to pass a DHS/Criminal History background check and have a good driving record to be eligible.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provide supervision and always ensure the safety of shelter residents—this is the top priority, with extra attention to ensuring a calm and secure environment during overnight hours.
  • Conduct routine bed checks and facility walkthroughs (every 30–60 minutes) to monitor resident well-being and shelter security.
  • Respond appropriately and effectively to unexpected situations or crises, including overnight disturbances, medical needs, or emotional distress.
  • Maintain a quiet and restful atmosphere within the shelter to support residents' ability to sleep and feel secure.
  • Prepare and serve light meals or snacks during overnight hours, efficiently utilizing available resources.
  • Assist youth in transitioning into and out of the shelter during overnight hours, including completing intake paperwork and orienting new residents when needed.
  • Foster a supportive environment by promoting respect, understanding, and empathy toward the unique needs of each youth.
  • Inspect living areas after a youth has completed their chores and after the youth has exited to ensure that shelter cleanliness and hygiene standards are maintained.
  • Accurately document youth disclosures of abuse or neglect and submit mandated reports to the appropriate authorities.
  • Maintained thorough and accurate overnight documentation, including house logs, incident reports, and shift summaries.
  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating high ethical standards, professionalism, and integrity.
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with day shift staff and service providers by providing a clear and complete shift hand-off.
  • Assist with additional activities as requested.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide appropriate crisis intervention services to youth and families with sensitivity to trauma and the unique challenges of nighttime crises.
  • Professionally manage incoming phone calls and provide appropriate assistance, including handling after-hours inquiries and emergency referrals.
  • Complete youth intakes, house logs, and other required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Perform basic cleaning and facility upkeep duties to ensure the shelter is ready for the next day (e.g., laundry, trash removal, surface sanitation).

Qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • A valid Oregon driver’s license with a minimum of three years of driving experience.
  • Ability to pass a DHS involvement and criminal background check.
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification (or ability to obtain upon hire).
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion in all areas.
  • Prior experience working with at-risk youth is preferred.
  • Ability to motivate youth, set appropriate boundaries, instill accountability, and provide positive influence, encouragement, and hope.
  • Strong initiative, compassion, moral integrity, and reliability.
  • Ability to professionally represent IYS through appearance, communication, and behavior.
  • Physical capability to complete all job duties, including light to medium housekeeping, lifting and transporting food boxes, and climbing stairs.
  • Capacity to stay awake, alert, and attentive throughout the entire overnight shift.

What is Integral Youth Services (IYS)? IYS is a private 501(c)3 non-profit social service agency that has been providing services in Klamath County since 1988. IYS serves as the umbrella agency overseeing a wide range of programs and services designed to benefit youth and their families. The various programs are designed to integrate with one another to meet any need a youth may have, whether physical, emotional, educational, spiritual, or vocational. What is My Friend's Place? My Friend's Place is the only youth shelter in Klamath County serving Homeless Runaway Youth ages 10-17 (a federally funded Basic Center Program). It also functions as a transitional shelter for DHS Foster Youth ages 10-17.

Position Description: In addition to the basic duties listed below, this is a non-professional, front-line position that works directly with youth in a residential setting, with a staff-to-youth ratio of 1:7 (plus an on-call manager) for each shift. Experience working with youth and training in the areas listed below is essential for success.
