Job Summary:
INTAG Aquaponics is actively seeking a skilled Research Assistant to support the operations of our pilot plant in Erie, PA. This position places a strong emphasis on laboratory analysis skills and requires a detail-oriented candidate with a solid foundation in environmental science, laboratory equipment, and water treatment maintenance. The Research Assistant will play a central role in maintaining and operating our patented aqueous vermireactors (AVRs), collaborating closely with research staff to ensure efficient AVR functioning. Key responsibilities include addressing technical issues, providing SOPs, optimizing experimental procedures, and contributing to the continuous improvement of our research objectives.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance of Water Treatment Systems:
- Perform routine inspections, maintenance, and repairs on water treatment equipment, including pumps, filters, valves, and piping systems.
- Monitor system performance and water quality parameters, promptly addressing any identified issues to uphold optimal functionality.
- Implement preventive maintenance measures to minimize downtime and ensure consistent system operation.
- Troubleshooting and Problem-Solving:
- Diagnose and resolve complex technical problems associated with water treatment systems, employing analytical skills and practical expertise.
- Propose and implement innovative solutions to enhance system efficiency, reliability, and performance in alignment with research goals and safety standards.
- Biological Water Treatment Expertise:
- Acquire knowledge of the principles and intricacies of novel biological water treatment processes.
- Collaborate with research personnel to design and execute experiments aimed at refining biological treatment methods and exploring new approaches.
- Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of system maintenance activities, water quality data, and experimental procedures to ensure comprehensive documentation.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and regulations governing the handling of biological materials and hazardous substances.
- Participate in safety training sessions and contribute to the development of safe work practices within the research facility.
Qualifications:
- The candidate should hold at least a B.Sc. degree, ideally with a focus in Agriculture, Biological Sciences, Environmental Sciences, or Plant Sciences, or a diploma in Agriculture or Horticulture.
- At least two years of experience working in research laboratories, utilizing a range of equipment for measuring water’s physicochemical properties, such as spectrophotometers and multi-parameter meters.
- Previous experience with agricultural biosolid waste and resource recovery is highly valued.
- Experience in maintaining water treatment systems, working in research laboratories, or similar roles is a plus.
- Basic plumbing and mechanical knowledge, along with experience in maintaining water treatment equipment, is beneficial.
- Ability to think critically, experiment creatively, and adapt to evolving research goals and challenges.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration in multidisciplinary teams.
- A background check is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift and transport heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds, as well as perform tasks requiring bending, stooping, and kneeling.
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $20.00 - $23.00 per hour
Expected hours: 10 – 30 per week
