The Van Driver / Security Guard is an essential member of ISMART (Integrated Street Medicine & Addiction Recovery Team), a pioneering program dedicated to providing healthcare services to underserved populations in Kern County. ISMART’s mission is to deliver equitable, quality, and compassionate medical and behavioral health care to sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness in Kern County in the setting of their choice.
Through mobile clinics and outreach efforts, ISMART bridges gaps in healthcare accessibility by delivering compassionate medical care directly to individuals experiencing housing insecurity and suffering from substance use disorders. The Van Driver / Security Guard ensures safe reliable transportation for staff, supplies, and equipment. While maintaining the safety of the team and clients. Additionally, the role supports the upkeep and organization of the team’s van, enabling seamless operations that reflect ISMART’s commitment to dignity, care, and innovation in healthcare delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Van Driver Duties :
- Transportation : Safely operate a van to transport ISMART staff, supplies, and equipment to outreach locations, adhering to all traffic and safety regulations.
- Vehicle Maintenance :
Conduct daily vehicle inspections, including tire pressure, fluid levels, lights, brakes, and overall condition. Schedule and coordinate routine maintenance (e.g., oil changes, tire rotations) and promptly report any repair needs. Ensure the van is fueled, clean, and operational to support ISMART’s mobile clinic schedule.
Logistics Coordination : Plan and navigate routes to outreach locations, ensuring timely and efficient service delivery.Equipment Loading / Unloading : Safely and efficiently load and unload medical equipment, supplies, and materials required for outreach activities.Security Guard Duties :
Team Safety : Monitor outreach environments to identify and address safety risks to ISMART team members, clients, and equipment.Conflict Resolution : De-escalate conflicts with professionalism and respect, maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for clients and team members.Access Control : Secure ISMART’s workspace and ensure only authorized individuals approach or access team equipment and supplies.Incident Reporting : Document and report any security concerns, incidents, or unsafe conditions to the ISMART team leader.Emergency Response : Assist with emergency protocols, including evacuations or contacting local authorities when needed.Van Upkeep and Organization :
Supply Storage : Maintain a well-organized van to ensure efficient access to supplies and prevent damage.Inventory Oversight : Track and manage inventory of medical and outreach supplies stored in the van, restocking as needed to support ISMART’s operations.General Support :
Client Interaction : Provide respectful, nonjudgmental assistance to clients, supporting ISMART’s mission of delivering compassionate care.Team Collaboration : Communicate effectively with ISMART team members to address transportation, security, and operational needs, ensuring smooth delivery of services.Complete Tasks as Assigned : Perform additional duties as requested by ISMART leadership to support team operations and goals.Requirements : Qualifications
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.Experience in a driver or security role preferred; familiarity with street medicine or addiction recovery settings is a plus.Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance (e.g., identifying service needs).Strong understanding of safety and conflict de-escalation techniques.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and maintain confidentiality.Comfort working in diverse and challenging environments, including urban areas and with vulnerable populations.Physical ability to lift and move supplies (up to 50 lbs).Work Environment
Primarily field-based, with exposure to varying weather and environmental conditions.Flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, and weekends, based on ISMART outreach needs.
