As a substance use peer specialist/recovery coach, you will be responsible for providing support and assistance to patients in navigating the healthcare system. Your main duties will include:
Role:
Navigates patients through non-medical and medical issues
Qualifications:
Individual must meet at least one of the following:
- An individual with a baccalaureate (BA) degree and two (2) years of lived experience;
- An individual with an associate’s degree and four (4) years of lived experience
Qualities:
- Harm-reduction approach to assisting patients with Substance Use Disorder (SUD)
- Ability to use computer systems, computer literacy, and knowledge of word processing
- Interest/proficiency in working with marginalized populations
- Ability to interact with patients in a culturally relatable manner
- Respect for patient confidentiality and privacy
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
General Responsibilities:
- Conduct initial assessments, introduce patients to treatment programs, serve as the primary coach for their clients, and maintain ongoing contact with their patients
- Assist with access to other services such as financial counseling, primary care, mental health services, social services, and residential treatment facilities
- Light office work
Specific Tasks:
- Become knowledgeable with the continuum of care, as well as all substance use treatment services, providers, and advocacy agencies within the defined service area
- Assist with identification of patients with a substance use or co-occurring mental health disorders and to receive referrals of eligible patients
- Maintain up-to-date information about the effects of various substances, withdrawal symptoms, and treatment options in order to effectively educate and counsel patients
- Promote harm-reduction strategies based on clients’ goals/preferences and circumstance
- Use motivational interviewing techniques to communicate with patients in a respectful, culturally appropriate, non-judgmental manner
- Should also be available for any activities that support their role
To excel in this role, you should possess the following skills:
- Case management: Ability to effectively manage and coordinate patient cases
- Medical records: Proficiency in maintaining and organizing medical records
- HIPAA: Understanding of patient privacy laws and regulations
- Behavioral health: Understanding of mental health conditions and treatment options
