The Surgical First Assistant assists the surgeon and patient care team by setting up and providing instruments, equipment and supplies for surgical procedures and related patient care activities. This position requires population specific competencies. Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as appropriate based on the level of patient contact this position requires. The Surgical First Assistant responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: * Maintains a safe, sterile environment which includes preparing, passing, holding, inserting, removing, cleaning and assembly of instruments, equipment and supplies * Assists the RN with circulating duties, transporting, positioning, skin preps and specimen preparation * Provides visualization of the operative site during the operative procedure * Performs the proper techniques in positing the patient and providing assisting the surgeon * Performs advanced skills that require knowledge of normal pathological anatomy and physiology * Accountable for assisting in the training and / or orientation of other surgical technicians The Surgical First Assistant reports to the assigned Clinical Manager / Director. This position may have additional or varied physical demand and/or respiratory fit test requirements. High exposure to hazardous risks and contaminants, including potential for exposure to infections and communicable diseases, blood and body fluids, electrical equipment, lasers, radiology and fluoroscopy equipment, needle sticks, suction splashing, chemicals, cleaning solvents - Stat IV, sterilization chemicals, hexacholorophate, betadine and sharps and wet floors. Temperatures may vary in procedure environment, may stand on hard floors or platforms, exposed to a variety of interruptions, odor, and must wear universal protective clothing. May be required to work overtime, late shifts, weekends and be on call. Potential for bodily injury related to lifting and incidents of workplace violence. Hazards will be minimized if universal safety procedures are followed. * Current CST/CFA Certification or 8 years experience as a scrub technician providing direct patient care and eligible to sit for the First Assistant Certification (CFA) including 350 verified cases or eligible as a graduate of an accredited CAAHEP CFA program with 135 verified cases * Basic Live Support / CPR * Completion of a vocational training program or in-house training program for surgical technicians * Successful completion of Surgical Tech test. * Must be able to communicate effectively in English
