Intel Labs is seeking a Hardware Engineer specializing in System Prototyping to join the Silicon and Systems Prototyping Lab. This role involves collaborating with research scientists to define requirements, develop, test, and deliver hardware prototypes that support cutting-edge research in areas such as silicon photonics, heterogeneous compute, power delivery, and artificial intelligence. The engineer will design PCBs and hardware prototypes to validate experimental test chips, SoCs, FPGA, or CPU-based platforms, emphasizing end-to-end ownership and accountability throughout the design cycle.

- Collaborate with research scientists to define and document hardware requirements.
- Design and develop PCBs and hardware prototypes for experimental test chips and platforms.
- Manage the complete design cycle, including concept, architecture, component selection, schematic capture, board layout, fabrication, assembly, and initial bring-up.
- Utilize electronic test and measurement equipment for hardware validation and debugging.
- Implement low-level PCB interfaces such as SPI, I2C, PMBUS, JTAG, and UART.
- Document project objectives and technical requirements clearly for review by stakeholders.
- Support stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle, ensuring successful delivery and integration.
- Communicate effectively with team members, management, suppliers, and customers to ensure alignment and progress.
- Demonstrate problem-solving skills and adaptability in a dynamic research environment.
- Work collaboratively in a team-oriented setting, fostering a positive and productive work atmosphere.
- Take initiative in managing tasks and meeting project deadlines.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree with 4 years of experience OR Master’s Degree with 3 years of experience in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or STEM-related field.
- 5 years of Experience in PCB design, including architecture, component selection, schematic capture, board layout, and industrial standard fabrication and assembly.
- 5 years in using electronic test and measurement equipment (e.g., oscilloscopes, multimeters, signal generators, logic analyzers).
- 5 years of experience in reading component datasheets and integrating components into application circuits.
- 2 years of experience with the ability to document project objectives and technical requirements clearly for stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with third-party suppliers, reviewing deliverables, and providing feedback.
- Schematic capture experience with Cadence Concept (Design Entry HDL) or System Capture.
- PCB layout experience with Cadence Allegro.
- Experience implementing high-speed interfaces such as USB, PCIe, DDR4.
- Knowledge of signal integrity and power integrity modeling and simulation.
- Mechanical design and system modeling experience.
- Experience in implementing high-current power delivery for CPU/GPU platforms.
