The Research Scientist will be an integral member of the Photonic, Electronic, and Soft Materials Division, contributing to key research initiatives within the Polymers and Specialty Materials Branch. The primary responsibilities include synthesizing and characterizing self-healing polymers, elastomers, and functional materials, with a focus on nanomaterials and functional polymers to enhance performance and introduce advanced functionalities. The position utilizes both conventional synthetic methods and machine learning-driven approaches for material design and optimization. Extensive experience with polymer and nanomaterial characterization techniques is essential, including Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC) for molecular weight analysis, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) for structural characterization, Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) for viscoelastic profiling, tensile testing for mechanical properties, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) for functional group identification, and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) for nanoscale surface characterization. Emphasis areas include developing novel polymer architectures with self-healing properties, functionalizing nanomaterials for enhanced material properties, and applying AI/ML techniques to predict performance and optimize synthetic pathways. A background in polymer synthesis, nanomaterials functionalization, and data-driven materials research is preferred. Familiarity with AI/ML models and a willingness to learn programming languages such as Python is also desirable.

Primary Responsibilities Include
- Synthesizing novel self-healing polymers, elastomers, and functional nanomaterials using both traditional and AI/ML-enhanced approaches.
- Characterizing polymer and nanomaterial properties through techniques such as GPC, NMR, DMA, tensile testing, FTIR, and AFM.
- Functionalizing nanomaterials to enhance mechanical, electrical, or chemical properties for specific applications.
- Incorporating AI/ML models to optimize material synthesis and performance prediction.
- Applying a deep understanding of polymer chemistry, nanomaterial functionalization, and machine learning to advance the development of innovative, resilient materials.
- This position will involve working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Masters or PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field of study required
- Python programming (entry level )
