Position Title : Product Engineer - Electrical and Controls

Overview :
We are seeking an experienced Product Engineer specializing in electrical and controls systems to join our product engineering team. Reporting to the Product Engineering Manager, this role involves developing, designing, and implementing advanced control solutions for custom product applications. These systems range from basic on / off controls to sophisticated programmable logic controllers (PLCs) that incorporate project-specific data to guide system functionality. The role requires 10%-20% travel across North America to provide on-site technical support for manufacturing and installation projects.
Primary Responsibilities :
Control System Design and Development :
- Develop and customize control systems based on project and product-specific requirements.
- Integrate products seamlessly into existing building management systems (BMS) or automation systems (BAS).
- Ensure compliance with relevant electrical codes and standards for all designs.
- Assemble and test prototypes and control panels as needed.
- Create design verification plans, including acceptance criteria.
- Lead and assist in prototype manufacturing builds.
Project Estimation and Support :
Collaborate with project engineering teams to provide accurate cost estimates for control systems.Develop and validate bills of materials (BOM) for projects, including specifications for wiring, enclosures, and components.Address customer inquiries or coordinate with subcontractors to define project scope.Contribute to the development of technical proposal packages for clients.Documentation and Standards :
Prepare technical drawings, such as wiring diagrams and panel layouts.Develop PLC programming and operational logic for control systems.Author installation, operation, and maintenance manuals for products.Maintain and update product catalogs and internal engineering standards for electrical components and systems.Technical Support and Troubleshooting :
Provide remote assistance for diagnosing and resolving control system issues.Travel to installation sites to address technical problems and implement solutions as needed.Conduct root cause analyses to prevent future occurrences.Qualifications and Requirements :
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or a technical discipline, with at least 2 years of relevant experience.Strong understanding of AC / DC motors, variable frequency drives (VFDs), motor starters, industrial control systems (e.g., transformers, relays, PLCs, signaling devices), and related technologies.Hands-on experience with PLC programming (e.g., ladder logic, structured text).Familiarity with Ethernet communications and compliance with electrical codes and standards.Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and document markup tools like Acrobat or Bluebeam Revu; CAD / SolidWorks experience preferred.Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in team environments.Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with a professional demeanor in person, over video, and on calls.A problem-solving mindset with a focus on technical design and innovation.
