Project Description
To help low-income older adults improve their digital skills, avoid scams, access benefits, and stretch their income, the Digital Navigator VISTA Member will build and expand Digital Literacy programming. The Digital Navigator VISTA Member will build partnerships with host locations like community centers, libraries, and senior housing; create systems for procuring, setting up and maintaining a mobile lab; create a recruitment, training, and management system for Digital Literacy volunteers; and test out methods for delivering classes, including scheduling systems, outreach and sign-up methods, data tracking, and collecting feedback to improve the program.
Member Duties
The Digital Navigator VISTA Member will develop a pilot program with community partners to meet the digital literacy needs of low-income older adults in Onondaga County. Activities will include developing program materials and a network for participant recruitment; collaborating with community partners to host classes; creating tools to measure and assess the impact of the program; and contributing to community-wide efforts to grow digital literacy in our region.

Working conditions and physical demands required:
The demands described here are representative of those that must be met by the VISTA Member to successfully perform the essential functions of the job:
- Must have personal vehicle for regular travel throughout Onondaga County; must be able to travel through the service area at least 50% of the time using reliable transportation, traversing streets, ascending/descending stairs, and exposed to outside weather conditions
- Working some nights and weekends required
- Remain in a stationary position at a workstation and use a computer approximately 25-50% of the time
- Ability to frequently sit for long periods attending meetings/trainings

Our growing list of programs include volunteer-based companionship and friendly visits for older adults living at home and in Long Term Care Facilities; respite for family caregivers; outreach and assistance to help older adults connect with the resources they need to age well; social activities, case management, and English classes for older New Americans; and Digital Navigator classes. We also convene the Greater Syracuse Aging Services Coalition, which builds collaborative initiatives to promote social connection and opportunity for all older adults in our community.
