Position

ISS is seeking a candidate with mechanical experience or strong mechanical aptitude as a lead technical inspector. This position would both inspect intermodal equipment as well as manage the employees who attend the intermodal gate. The ideal candidate would possess solid communication and organization skills, attention to detail, mechanical aptitude, and independent judgement.

Principle Responsibilities for Lead Technical Inspector:

To conduct off-hire, on-hire, in-service and new production surveys on dry cargo, refrigerated and tank marine containers, chassis, over-the-road generators and trailers to AAR, IICL and other agreed industry standards.

  • This includes noting the condition of equipment, as well as, writing and/or making decisions as to adjusting repair estimates to reflect customer agreed labor times and material costs for the repair of damages and maintenance requirements. Negotiate costs with a repair vendor to reach best price.
  • To ensure that equipment conforms to acceptable safety criteria and use of sound judgment and discretion to reject unsound equipment for service.
  • To be familiar with domestic and international rules and regulations affecting the use and movement of intermodal equipment and to be aware of all required safety rules and regulations for the conduct of inspection responsibilities and apply these when inspecting the condition of equipment.
  • To be familiar with the proper methods to repair and refurnish intermodal equipment, utilizing the required tools and instruments to complete proper inspections.
  • To promptly respond to customer’s requests and report the results of inspections in a timely manner. The preparation of neat and accurate paperwork, adherence to customer requirements in conformity with company inspection procedures.
  • Safely operate a vehicle and abide by all rules and regulations of ISS, customers and state.
  • Use independent discretion to stop truck drivers from taking loads or even instructing them to take trailers to a repair shop
  • Complete reports concerning estimate damage and make decisions regarding whether or not to identify certain damage on such reports.
  • Hire, train, develop and appraise staff. Takes corrective action as necessary on a timely basis and in accordance with company policy. Consults with Human Resources as appropriate.
  • Manage employee performance. Conduct annual employee reviews and make recommendations for merit increases.
  • Ensure all customer and ISS training and policy requirements are met.
  • Review weekly time sheets and ensure time and attendance are being correctly reported.

Minimum Requirements for Lead Technical Inspector:

  • The ability to walk, stand, climb in and out of trailers/containers (using the “three points of contact method”)
  • Preferred one-year recent Transportation Industry experience (equipment surveying, repair shop estimate, intermodal operations, etc.)
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Approved MVR
  • Approved Background Check
  • High School Diploma or equivalency
  • Basic mathematical knowledge as well as a basic understanding of Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and web based data systems.
