Job Summary:Assists with and coordinates multiple environmental programs and projects related to environmental compliance, environmental stewardship, and NPS contractual requirements related to environmental sustainability

 

The Details:Position Type: SeasonalSeason Dates: May 29th - August 13th 2025Pay: $17.60Schedule: Typical schedule is 40 hours, 5 days per week (may include weekends, evenings, and holidays)

Responsibilities

  • Review and be familiar with Xanterra’s ISO 14001 EMS programs.
    • Review, record, and analyze utility data for both usage variances and costs as well as identifying challenges and opportunities to improve environmental management. Prepare monthly dashboards for the Director team.
    • May be tasked with completing one Sustainability internal department inspection and assist with developing and implementing corrective or preventative action plans to address any issues found.
    • May be asked to assist with Sustainability training as needed, especially department trainings for the recycling and composting programs and possibly New Employee Orientation.
  • Co-manage and oversee the recycling and food waste composting programs at Grand Canyon National Park Lodges. This includes, but is not limited to:
    • Various aspects of the Recycling, Composting, and Operation Shrively Apple programs, including container collection and transport. Please see the Physical Requirements below.
    • Provide direct feedback to Sustainability Director on recycling, composting, and Operation Shrively Apple processes and performance.
    • Actively engage location staff with recycling, composting, and Operation Shrively Apples tips and basic support of sustainability program implementation.
    • Assist department staff with maintaining recycling, composting, and Operation Shrively Apple areas and equipment to sanitation and resource management standards.
    • During busy times of the day, assist the Porters with collection of plastic bottles and aluminum cans from the Rim Trail recycling containers.
  • Assist with 3rd party Waste Audit this summer.
  • Review and analyze weekly and monthly reports of online guest comments as they relate to environmental issues.
  • Work safely to avoid injuries and accidents, including the use of the proper Personal Protective Equipment (mainly gloves and footwear).
  • Safe and responsible operation and care of recycling/composting vehicle(s) including safe operation, compliance with all traffic and safety laws, maintaining vehicle cleanliness, and reporting accidents and near misses.
  • Attend Green Team meetings and participate in any events that occur during the term of the position.
  • Assist in preparing for and developing sustainable business strategies and new environmental programs for Xanterra including program development pertaining to Xanterra’s concession contract with the National Park Service. Assist with project planning and implementation as requested.
  • Develop and maintain a positive and productive relationship with the Xanterra department directors and staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Prior knowledge of or interest in learning waste management and overall Xanterra environmental programs, including ISO 14001 Environmental Management System, in order to serve as a resource for employees and Park visitors.
  • Prior knowledge of recyclable and compostable materials, collection systems, and processing methods is a plus.
  • Able to perform manual labor involved in collecting and transporting recycling supersacks and compost bins to designated 3rd party pickup area. Physical requirements below are mandatory.
  • Letter of recommendation from current Department Director or Manager is required.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving record, ability to operate light trucks and box truck with liftgate, and successful completion of Xanterra Drivers Training course required.
  • Ability to positively interact with a wide variety of personalities.
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated competency with Microsoft Office and/or similar applications
  • Good organizational skills and ability to work with minimal supervision to complete assigned tasks in a timely and professional manner.
  • Interest in hiking within the Canyon is a plus, not required

Physical Requirements include:

  • Constantly standing, walking, sitting, and handling throughout a shift.
  • Frequently reaching outward and above shoulders, along with lifting and carrying.
  • Occasionally hiking, climbing, crawling, squatting, kneeling, and bending.
  • Frequently lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds.
  • Frequently pushing or pulling up to 100 pounds.
