ABOUT THE ROLE
As the Director, Environmental, Health & Safety, you will have the opportunity to develop, implement and drive the future direction and employee culture of EHS at GILLIG. This role will ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards, promote a culture of safety, and drive continuous improvement in EHS performance. We are looking for a Certified Safety Professional who will be a subject-matter expert in Health, Safety and Environmental best practices and lead a world-class safety program at our primary location in Livermore, CA as well as 2 additional facilities in Hayward, CA and Loveland, CO. You will be responsible for identifying and mitigating risks, conducting training, and ensuring a safe, healthy and compliant work environment. As a successful candidate, you will serve as a key business partner with various departments and have a strong ability to balance compliance with operational needs.
The Director of Environmental, Health and Safety is responsible for all aspects of GILLIG’s environmental, health and safety including, but not limited to, OSHA compliance, environmental and other safety related regulatory compliance, internal and external safety audits/inspections, incident investigations, the GILLIG safety committee, and safety/environmental related employee training. You should have a strong desire to develop partnerships throughout the organization and successfully build collaborative relationships. You will be required to have both a strategic view and a willingness to do hands-on work daily.
As the Director of Environmental, Health and Safety, you will report to the Executive VP of Operations and will have the opportunity to build your own EHS team of 2 direct reports.
IN THIS ROLE YOU WILL
- Partner with production leadership, other business stakeholders and Executive leadership to proactively, identify, develop, and implement a GILLIG safety culture with strategic safety initiatives and solutions to reduce risk, severity and the total number of workplace injuries
- Drive and encourage a positive safety culture through your leadership, actions and coaching of all levels of employees. Be an active resource and advisor to all managers and production personnel as it pertains to safety and environmental compliance
- Develop and enforce all EHS procedures, policies and programs. Monitor compliance to reduce risks and create a world-class safety culture
- Lead thorough investigations of workplace injuries and accidents, determine root cause and recommend abatement/correction to the appropriate team(s)
- Develop and maintain GILLIG’s emergency response plans and procedures. Manage GILLIG’s Emergency Response Team and conduct emergency evacuation drills on an annual basis
- Conduct regular EHS audits and inspections including, but not limited to, JHA’s, DHA’s, and ADA assessments. Identify safety issues/concerns, recommend solutions and partner with the appropriate departmental leaders to achieve resolution
- Act as the liaison for GILLIG with federal, state, local regulatory agencies/officials serving as the subject matter expert in environmental health & safety and associated compliance
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state and local environmental, health and safety regulations and reporting, and keep abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization
- Develop, prepare, analyze and report safety metrics through regular monitoring and reporting of KPI’s to GILLIG leadership. Develop and execute plans to continuously improve and remediate any negative trends
- Responsible for all EHS documentation and record-keeping. Ensure all EH&S databases, OSHA written programs, regulatory records, and SOPs are maintained in compliance with regulatory standards
- Coach, mentor and manage the GILLIG EHS team to effectively execute GILLIG’s EHS strategies and procedures
- Proactively collaborate with GILLIG’s HR department to develop and implement timely and effective safety training for all employees in compliance with all regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with continuous Improvement and Manufacturing Engineering in developing and implementing environmental sustainability strategies, regulations and initiatives
- Facilitate monthly safety training for production, GILLIG safety committee monthly meetings, and executive leadership safety reviews. Prepare and present reports to senior management, highlighting issues and making recommendations for mitigation or abatement
- May be responsible for responding to after hour work related emergencies and serve as back up coverage for GILLIG’s on-site doctor, responding to onsite medical injuries or emergencies
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental science, or related subject preferred
- Minimum of 10 years’ of progressively responsible experience in safety, and/or related safety field; within a heavy manufacturing environment a plus
- Minimum 5 years of demonstrated strong EHS leadership experience
- Professional certification/training in CPR, First Aid, and OSHA 30
- Professional designation/certifications in ASSE (American Society of Safety Professionals), NFPA CESCP (NFPA Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional, National Safety Council, and/or BCSP (Board Certified Safety Professionals) a plus
- Must have extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations
- Must be an effective communicator verbally, in writing, and presenting to groups at all levels of the organization
- Proficient using MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), Internet searching, and general MS Windows user
- Self-starter who must be able to effectively work independently and as a member of a team
- Able to be hands on leadership and prioritize/multi-task in a strenuous and fast-paced work environment
- Proactive and accountable with strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Ability to lift 25 lbs.
- Physically able to conduct inspections and carry equipment used for inspections
- Regularly required to sit, stand, and walk, and occasionally kneel or squat
- Occasional travel required between our Livermore and our Hayward locations and to our Loveland, Colorado location
- Standard start time: 5:00 AM

EXPECTED COMPENSATION
$75,000 - $275,000/annual salary premium benefits
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job classification, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment.
